JACOB SCHENCK, 0F CLINTON, WISCONSIN.
DRAFT-EQUALIZER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1911.
Application filed November 5, 1910. Serial No. 590,944.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB SCHENGK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clinton, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Equalizers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to draft equalizers and is an improvement upon my former patent granted December 3, 1907, No. 872,460, and the object of this improvement is, to so construct the equalizer that it is particularly adapted for use upon grain binders, harvesters, and other vehicles or agricultural implements, wherein the tongue is mounted at one side. This object is attained by the means set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved construction. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of the pulley and its bracket, its support being shown in section.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views.
In the said drawing the reference numeral 1 denotes the usual pole or tongue of a wagon or other vehicle, to which are pivoted on a common pivot 2, two bars or levers 3 and 4, disposed on opposite sides of said pole or tongue, the bar 3 being approximately twice the length of the bar or lever 4. Said bars or levers 3 and a are intended to have attached to them the usual swingle and double-trees as desired, and are apertured throughout their length to adjustably receive the ends of a chain 5, which passes intermediate its length around a pulley 6 mounted in a bracket 7 having a transverse T-shaped recess in its under rear side and adapted to slidably engage a similarly shaped bar 8 having one end slotted, whereby it is adjustably secured to the pole or shaft 1, and its other end adapted to be secured by bolts or otherwise to a bar 12 pivoted to the frame of the device to be drawn.
The bar 8 is provided throughout its length with a series of apertures or notches 9 adapted to successively register with an aperture in bracket 7, a removable bolt or pin 10 being provided for said bracket aperture to retain said bracket in any adjusted position transversely on said bar 8, and said bracket is also provided with a set-screw 10 to engage the pin 10 and hold it in place. A brace rod 11 is employed to more firmly maintain said bar 8 in position.
In the drawing a portion of a binder frame with its cutter-bar, pitman, and crank is shown, to which is attached the equalizer, showing where it is preferable to attach the device.
From the above description the operation of my improved construction will be under stood as follows :-The device is adapted for use with three or more horses allowing them to be placed side by side, whereby a single neck-yoke can be used, and by adjusting the difierent parts of the device it can be regulated to accommodate the desired number of horses and to equalize their draft. As shown the device is adjusted for four horses, two for each side of the tongue, and by shifting the bracket and its pulley three or five horses can be used as desired. The adjustment of the ends of the chains will equalize the draft. The bar 8 as before stated is adjustably secured at one end to the tongue, whereby it can be fitted to dilferent sized frames. To further support and brace the device, a short tongue 13 pivoted at 1% to the frame and secured at its other end to the brace 11, is provided. Said tongue has a rod 15 pivoted thereto, which is adapted to be connected to an elevating mechanism on the binder, said mechanism not being shown, for raising and lowering the front of the binder.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A draft equalizer, comprising a vertically pivoted tongue, oppositely disposed levers pivoted thereon, a bar having one end adjustably secured to said tongue and its other end adapted to be pivotedly secured to the device to be drawn, a bracket provided with a pulley mounted slidably upon said bar, a chain adapted to engage said pulley and having its ends secured to said pivoted levers, a brace rod between said tongue and the pivoted end of said lever, and a short tongue having one In testimony whereof I aifix my signature end secured to said brace rod and its other in presence of two Witnesses.
end adapted for pivotal connection to said T device to be drawn, whereby a rigid, verti- JACOB SGHEL Cally pivoted equalizer is provided that can W'itnesses: be adjusted to harvester frames of different H. A, MOEHLENPAH, Widths. W. H. OHEESMAN.
