To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY DOYLE, a citizen of the United States of America, and re-' siding at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photographic Plates, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which 'it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to photography, and the object thereof is to provide a combined sensitized plate, adapted to receive a positive image, and a frame therefor.

A further object isto so construct the separate elements that they may be readily assembled without the use of machinery.

A further object is-to cause the said elements, when joined, to adhere firmly to each other against accidental dislodgment but permitting, if desired, a separation .the'reof.

A further object is to provide a frame element of much greater thickness thanv the sensitized element in order to protect the latter when placed in the magazines of photographing machines, and also when the photograph is complete.

A further object is to rovide means which prevent the passage 0 liquids, developing or others, into the said frame element, sai means serving also as a strengthener for the said sensitized element.

A further objectv is to provide means whereby the said plate and frame may be connected with a card or the like, for display, mailing and the like; and a further object is to provide such a combined plate and frame which is simple in construction, well adapted for the purposes for which it is intended, and very inexpensive.

My invention is fully set forth in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of my invention in a finished state; Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof; Fig. 3 is a central section of the frame element; Fig. 4 is a similar section of the sensitized element; Fig. 5 is a view of a card upon which my invention is adapted to be mounted; and Fig. 6 is a central vertical In the drawings forming a part of this ap- Y Specification of Letters Patent. At 7) I have shown my frame element pro-- vided with an exterior downwardly directed flange b of approximately the same interior diameter as the exterior diameter of the flange a and of slightly greater height, said frame being also provided with aninterior similarly directed flange b of a slightly less height than the flange b and the exterior diameter of the said flange b is approximately that of the interior diameter of the rib a and with which it is adapted to cooperate.

As clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 6, the sensitized plate a is provided with a plurality of circumferentially arranged, inwardly directed lugs 0 formed by a U- shaped cut in the said plate, said lugs being adapted to be raised above the plane of'the said plate for the purpose later described.

In Figs. 5 and 6 I have-shown a card d provided with a plurality of segmental slots 03 through which the lugs a may be passed to hold the plate a to the card, and, as the position of the image on the plate a is never in fixed relation to the lugs c, the said plate a may be adjusted on the said card to accurately position the said image because of the segmental slots and, when so positioned, the lugs 0 may be forced against the card and the plate a is locked thereto.

In practice, the plates a are stamped from a sheet of sensitized material and then formed by means of a die, this being also true of the frame elements, the latter however being stamped from' gold, silver, brass,-

aluminum, or other desired highly finished material, and any desiredornamentation may also be impressed upon or in the said frame in the formation thereof. The said stamping, formation, and also the assembling is necessarily performed in a dark room, and in the said assembling, all that is necessary is to slip the frame elementover the sensitized element in the manner of placin a cover on a box, this requiring neither s ill nor machinery, and when the said elements are forced together they are maintained in this position by means of the close fit or contact of the flanges a and b and, at the same time, the flange b bears against the rib 0, thus forming the field of the image and also preventing the admission of liquids within the frame.

It will thus be seen that I provide a combined photo plate and frame therefor which are readily assembled and do not require an inturned flange at the back of the plate a as in'devices of this kind now in use.

My completed device may be used alone or it may be mounted upon a card, for mailing or display, and, if desired, the elements may be separated by force, and the device as a whole, is compact, attractive, and inexpensive, and, while I have shown the device as round, any other configuration may be employed according to taste or varying conditions, and other changes in the form of embodiment shown and described may be made within the scope of the following claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A sensitized photogra hic plate provided with a peripheral ange, a' frame thereforprovided with a peripheral flange engaged by said first named flange, said plate being provided with an integral, annular, rib, and said frame being provided with an inwardly directed, supplemental, flange cooperating with saidrib to form a tight joint.

2. A sensitized photographic plate provided with a peripheral flange, a frame therefor provided with a peripheral flange engaged by said first named flange, said plate being provided with an annular rib and said frame with an inwardly directed, supplemental flange, cooperating with said rib to form a tight joint, and said plate being provided with integral lugs arranged between the rib and the flange thereof.
