IWVENTOR d'iycvlowwgm ANDREW COGHE. 0F PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
COLLAPSIBLE BOX AND CRATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1911.
Application filed October 12, 1910. Serial No. 586,671.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. CoeHE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Boxes and Crates, of which the following is a specification. reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to collapsible boxes and crates. and the primary object of my invention is to provide a collapsible box or crate consisting of comparatively few parts easily and quickly assembled for use, and knocked down for folding.
Another object of this invention is to provide a box of the above type having detachable walls, with the end walls furnished with simple and effective means for retaining the top,-bottom'and side walls in engagementtherewith when the box is in position for u e.
A further object of this invention is to provide a collapsible box that can be advantageously used for shipping various kinds of merchandise, the box when empty being collapsed and returned with little ex pense to the original shipper.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a collapsible box that will occupy a comparatively small space when collapsed, consequently can be stored or transported and in either instance occupy a small space.
A still further object of this invention is to accomplish the above results by a box that is strong and durable, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to handle, and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the novel construction to be hereinafter described in detail and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawings forming part of this specification, Wherein:-
Figure 1 is a plan of a box constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. .2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the box collapsed, Fig. 4 is a view of the outer side of one of the end walls, Fig. 5 is a view of the inner side of one of the end walls, Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view of the box,
and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the end walls.
The box comprises metallic end walls 1, a bottom plate 2, a top plate or lid 3 and side walls 4. The end walls are preferably made of sheet metal cut and pressed to hold the vertical edges of the walls 4 and ends of the plates 2 and 3. The end walls 1 are formed with pockets 5 for the ends 6 of the bottom plate 2. The vertical edges of the walls 1 are shaped to provide vertical grooves 7 and inwardly projecting flanges 8. The inwardly projecting flanges are adapted to engage in vertical grooves 9 provided therefor in the outer sides of the walls 4, said grooves extending from the lower edges of the walls to the upper edges thereof and being located adjacent to the ends of said walls. The grooves are removed sufficiently from the ends of the walls, whereby the ends can engage in the grooves 7 of the walls 1. with the lower edges of the walls 4 resting upon the bottom plate 2.
The upper edges of the walls 1 are shaped to provide grooves 10 and the flanges 11 are bent inwardly, as at 11 to present a smooth edge, the upper and lower walls of the grooves 10 are apertured, as at 12 whereby a lock, seal or other device can be employed for locking the ends of the top plate or lid 3 in the grooves 10. The ends of the top plate or lid 3 are provided with openings 13 adapted to register with the openings 12, whereby the lid which corresponds in width to the bottom plate 1, can be locked in a closed position.
From the foregoing it will be observed that I have devised novel means for assembling the different parts of a box, and that a structure is provided that will stand rough handling and can be used for various puroses.
What I claim is 1. A collapsible box including metallic end walls, each of said walls provided at the top with a horizontally-disposed pocket, at each of its sides with a vertically-extending pocket, and at its bottom with a horizontally-extending pocket, the vertical pockets being disposed to one side of the ends of the upper horizontal pocket, and the lower ends of the vertical pockets registering with the ends of the lower horizontal pockets, a bottom plate having its ends extending into the lower horizontal pockets of said end walls, the side walls having their ends extendin in the vertical pockets of the end walls, an a top having its ends extending in the upper horizontal pockets of the end walls.
2. A collapsible box including metallic end walls, each of said walls provided at the top with a horizontally-disposed pocket, at each of its sides with a vertically-extending pocket, and at its bottom with a horizontally-extending pocket, the vertical pockets being disposed to one side of the ends of the upper horizontal pocket, and the lower ends of the vertical pockets registering with the ends of the lower horizontal pockets, a bottom plate having its ends extending into the lower horizontal pockets of said end walls, the side walls having their ends extending in the vertical pockets of the end walls, and a top having its ends extending in the upper horizontal pockets of the end walls, said pockets of said end walls ofi-set outwardly with respect to the body-portions of said end walls.
3. A collapsible box including metallic end walls, each of said walls provlded at the top with a horizontally-disposed pocket, at each of its sides with a vertically-extending pocket, and at its bottom with a horizontally-extending pocket, the vertical pockets being disposed to one side of the ends of the upper horizontal pocket, and the lower ends of the vertical pockets registering with the ends of the lower horizontal pockets, a bottom plate having its ends extending into the lower horizontal pockets of said end walls,
the side walls having their ends extending in the vertical pockets of the end walls, and a top having its ends extending in the upper horizontal pockets of the end Walls, each of said side walls in proximity to each end thereof and on its outer face provided with a vertically-disposed groove and each of the outer walls of each of said vertically-disposed pockets provided with an inwardlyextending flange engaging in a groove of a side wall.
4. A collapsible box including metallic" end walls, each of said walls provided at the top with a horizontally-disposed pocket, at each of its sides with a vertically-extending pocket, and at its bottom with a horizontally-extending pocket, the vertical pockets being disposed to one side of the ends of the upper horizontal pocket, and the lower ends 0 the vertical pockets registering with the ends of the lower horizontal pockets, a bottom plate having its ends extending into the lower horizontal pockets of said end walls, the side walls having their ends extending in the vertical pockets of the end walls, a top having its ends extending in the upper horizontal pockets of the end walls, and means whereby the top can be locked to the upper and lower walls of the upper horizontal pockets.
In testimony in the presence whereof I afiix my signature of two witnesses.
