Application filed February 15, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of West Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Projectiles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a projectile with the object in view of providing a projectile which will prevent erosion of the bore of the gun in which the projectile is fired, under the high pressures at present in use.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a portion of the powder chamber and chase of a gun, showing the projectile in position for firing. Fig. 2 is a View in detail of the projectile partly in elevation and partly in section, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the projectile in the plane of the line A A. of Fig. 2.
The body of the projectile is denoted by 1, and is here shown as a solid projectile provided with a pointed forward end as is common. The rear end of the projectile is reduced in diameter as shown at 2, and the rear portion of this reduced part is provided with a screwthread 8 for screwing on the rotating band 4% of some suitable metal to engage the rifiing lands 5 in the chase of the gun 6.
Intermediate of the rotating band i and the body of the projectile 1 and on the reduced rearward extension 2 of the body, there is located a band 7 of some suitable compressible material, for example, vulcanized fiber. The interior of the band 7 is cut away so as to form, when the band is placed on the projectile, an annular chamber 8 between the inner face of the band 7 and the outer face of the reduced portion 2.
This chamber is closed at its rear end by the rotating band t and at its forward end it is Specificatiori of Letters Patent.

treme diameter of the band 7 is greater than that of the body of the shell 1, and of the i otating band 4, and it is intended that the band 7 shall be compressed radially during the initial movement of the projectile by the engagement therewith of the tapered interior wall 11 of the gun at the forward end of the powder chamber.
The chase of the gun which is preferred for use in connection with this projectile is provided with a smooth bore portion 12 intermediate of the front of the powder chamber and the rifled portion of the chase, so that the compressed band 7 will tightly close the bore of the gun during the early travel of the projectile without any liability of becoming torn or cut by the rifling. This smooth bore portion furthermore, permits the projectile to advance with ease during its initial movement and hence has a tendency to relieve the strain of the high pressure during its early stage.
In order to prevent the gases resulting from the explosion of the powder from attacking the wall of the bore during the moment of intense heat and high pressure which prevails during the early movement of the projectile, the chamber 8 within the band 7 is charged with a suitable coating material, for instance grease or par-aflin, which, when the band 7 is compressed radially by the tapered wall 11, will be forced out through the holes 10, filling the annular groove 9 and distributing itself along the inner wall of the bore of the gun as the projectile progresses.
By placing the radially compressible band 7 with its charge of grease or other suitable coating material near the heel of the pro jectile, the surface of the bore is protected from gases from a point at the front of the powder chamber forward and by placing the rotating band 4 on the heel of the projectile with the compressible band in close proximity thereto, the gases are held back from escaping around the rearward portion of the projectile until the projectile has actually left the forward end of the bore so that scoring at that point is obviated.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A projectile provided with a band arranged to be compressed radially by its movement along the tapered wall of a gun, said radially compressible band having a chamber therein for holding a suitable coating material and having one or more openings from the chamber to the exterior of the band for the passage therethrough of the coating material when the band is compressed.
2. A projectile provided with a compressible band having an annular groove in its outer surface and a chamber within the band for retaining a suitable coating material and with one or more openings between the chamber and the bottom of the said groove for the passage of the coating material when the band is compressed.
3. A projectile provided with a rotating band at its heel and with a chambered perforated band arranged to be compressed radially by its movement along the tapered Wall of a gun, said radially compressible band being held in place on the projectile by the rotating band.
