Letters Patent No. 99,749, dated February 15, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRIPPERS AND GAUGES '.EOR PRINTING-PRESSES.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
.To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BARTH, ot' Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Friskets; and I hereby declare the follo\\"ingl to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specitication.
My invention relates to an appendage to a ii'isket, which, ou the elevation 'of the clamps, serves asa gauge to enable the attendant ofthe printing or other 'press 'fo-place the blank or sheet of paper. accurately upon the platen, and which permits of the proper closure of the ii-isket, as well as ot itsA adjustment for blanks of diverse dimensions, when required.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a platen and frisliet embodying my linvention, the clamp being raised.
Figures 2 and 3 are vertical sections in the linea: x, representing the open andv closed positions of the frisket.
Figure 4 represents the-lower edge of the platen.
`Projecting from the rear side of the platen A are two lugs, B C, having grooves, l) c, forA the tongued ends of a sliding head, D, .which carries two short stroke frisket-jaws or clips,` E and F, for the foot and further side ot' the paper. These clips are secured'to the head D by the bolts G, which occupy aslot, d, in the head, which, when sndiciently slackened, can be adjusted for dilferent lengths of paper.
rlhe clip E also has a slot, e, to enable its adjustmeut forward or backward, for diierent widths of paper.
Each clip has on its under side, parallel with its edge, a groove, to contain a spring, H, or its equivalent, which at all times presses the top of the platen, so as, in the elevated condition of the clips, to serve as stops or gauges for the edges of the paper, and so as, in the closed condition ofthe clips, to be compressed wholly within its respective groove, so as not to interfere with the effective grip ofthe clips.
The lugs B C ai'ord journal bearing for a shaft, I, having cams J J', which, on a partial rotation of the A plate spring, M, may serve to depress the head D when relieved from the action-oi' the, cams.
In the `most complete forni of my improvement, I
-provide a linger, or fingers, N, upon either the rear end ot' the shaft, as represented, or upon any other portion lie/st adapted to the work-in hand, which finger, at each elevation of the short-stroke clips, is, by the accompanying partial rotation of the shaft, as already'explained, opened sutlicieutl f wide to admit of the easy removal ofthe printed and theideposit-ion of the blank sheet.
I have described the preferred form of my improvement, but may vary the same in non-essential particulars, or to suit particular' cases; for example, the
. gauge-pieces may consist of bars or strips, yconfined by guide-pins, links, slots, or other-device, and held in contact with the platen or tympan either by gravitation simply, or by springs, (see diagrams X Y Z,) and may be unaccompanied hy the wide opening-finger N.
Oneor more wide opening-tingers may be used in combination with one or more short-strobe i'riskets, unprovided with the described gauge-pieces.
I claim herein as new, and ot' my invention- 1. The spring guides or gauges H, or their equivalents, attached to the clamps, so as tg he adjusted therewith, substantially as set forth, for the purposes stated.
2. The wide opening paper-clamp or |1ger.N,n combination with the short-stroke friskets E, arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
hand.
HENRY BARTH.

In testimony of which invention, I hereunto setmy V
