HEDGE-TRIMMER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be'it known that I, JEssE B. LINCOLN, a citizen: of" the United States, residing at East Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Hedge-Trimmers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for trimming hedges, shrubbery, and the like and has for its essential objects, a uniform cut,
' adaptability to use upon either the top or the side of a hedge or shrubbery, and convenience of operation in any desired plane. Other objects will be here-in pointed out. To the above ends primarily my inven tion consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and wherein,

In its present form of embodiment my device comprises an oblong frame consisting of a horizontal top bar 5 and vertical end plates 6 to whose lower ends is fixed by screws 7 or otherwise a cutter blade 8. R0- tatably mounted in the end plates intermediate the bar and blade is the shaft 10 of a rotary cutter composed preferably of two oppositely disposed spiral blades 12 fixed to arms .13 upon hubs 14 fixed to the shaft. J ournaled in one of the plates 6 is a shaft 16 to whose end is fixed a crank arm 17 having a handle 18. Intermediate the shaft 16 and a projecting end of the shaft 10 upon the plate 6 is a stud 20 upon which is mounted a pinion 21 meshing with gears 22 and 23 upon shafts 16 and 10 respectively. Fixed to the center of the bar 5 is a vertical handle 25; and near the end of the bar adjacent the crank is a similar handle 26. Fixed in the handle 25 is a threaded projection 28 which engages the threads 29 in a socket 30 in the end of a rod 31 upon whose outer end is a curved bearing plate 32.
Fixed to the lower portion of the outer face of the plate 6 isa strap 34 in which is removably mounted the end of a laterally extending U shaped arm 35'upon whose'end IS a curved bearing plate 37.
In operation the crank 17 drives through the gears and pinions the shaft 10 and its rotary cutter whose blades 12 cooperate with the blade 8 to 'performthe cutting operation. When cutting the top of a hedge the device should be heldsubstantially in a horizont'al plane as shown in Fig. 1. In this case the rod31 is preferably unscrewed from the'ha'ndle25 and discarded, while the'arm 35 is in'sertedbeneaththe strap 34-. The op erator then grasps the handle 25 with one hand and operates the crank witlihis-other hand, while the plate 37 rests against his body, thus insuringample space'for'therotation of the crank and affording a convenient rest for the frame.
In Fig. 4 the device is shown in the posi tion desirable when cutting the side of the hedge. In this case the arm 35 is preferably withdrawn from its strap, and the rod or arm 31 attached to the handle 25. The operator grasps the handle 26 with one hand and operates the crank with the other, while the plate 32 rests against the operators leg or body.
the described arrangement of handles and bearing arms the frame is easily balanced.
The device insures a long regular cut in the same plane, thus avoiding the irregularities attendant upon the use of shears.
The operation of the device by a crank insures speed of operation without fatiguing the arm or blistering the hand.
What I claim is .1. In a hedge trimmer, the combination with a frame comprising a top bar and end plates, of a blade connecting the lower portions of the end plates, a rotary cutter mounted in the end plates adjacent the blade, means at one end of the frame for actuating the cutter, a plurality of handles fixed to the top bar and interspaced from each other, a bearing plate removably secured to one of said handles, and a rest upon one of the-end plates projected. beyond the actuating means for the cutter and adapted to bear against the body of the operator.
2. In a hedge trimmer, the combination with a frame comprising a top bar and end plates, of a blade connecting the plates, a cutter rotatably mounted in the plates, means for rotating the cutter, a handle upon the bar, a strap upon one of the plates, and
a removable rest comprising an arm engaged by the strap and a bearing plate upon the arm.
3. In a hedge trimmer, the combination with a frame and stationary blade, of a r0- tary cutter mounted in the ends of the frame adjacent the blade, a crank mounted in an end of the frame, operative connections at one end of the frame between the crank and the cutter, a handle fixed intermediate the length of the frame, a second handle upon the frame, a rest upon the first handle, and a curved rest at the end of the frame extended beyond the actuating means.
4:. In a hedge trimmer, the combination with a frame comprising a top bar and end plates, of a blade connecting the plates, a cutter rotatably mounted in the plates, a crank mounted in one of the plates, driving connections between the crank and cutter, a handle fixed to an intermediate portion of the bar, a projection upon the handle, a second handle upon the bar near the end thereof, and a rest comprising a rod provided with a socket to receive the projection, and a bearing plate upon the rod.
5. In a hedge trimmer, the combination of a frame, a stationary blade fixed in theframe, a shaft mounted in the frame parallel with the blade, a cutter comprising hubs fixed to the shaft, arms upon the hubs, and spiral blades upon the hubs, a driving shaft upon the frame, a crank upon the driving shaft, and driving connections at one end of the frame between the shafts, handles on said frame disposed at angles to each other and a removable rest and bearing plate at the same end of the frame as said driving connections.
