REPS EDWARD CHASE, OF CLIFTON, NEW JERSEY.
PLUMB-LEVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1911.
Application filed September 14, 1910. Serial No. 582,043.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REPS E. CHASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clifton, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Plumb-Level, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plumb levels.
The object of the invention is to provide an article of this character that shall be durable and practically free from danger of derangement in use; in which the parts shall be so constructed and arranged as to permit of the level attachment being removed, and secured to a new stock or straight edge when the latter has become damaged from use; and in which any wear of the pivot pin supporting the bob will not detract from the accuracy of the device.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of theplumb level as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this invention, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts: Figure l is a view in side elevation of a plumb level constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 22 Fig. 1 and looklng 1n the dlrection of the arrows thereon. Fig. 3 is a detailed view of the frame of the level.
The device embodies a stock or straight edge 1, constructed as usual of wood, and to which is secured the metallic level attachment. This attachment comprises a back plate 2 and an approximately semicircular hollow frame 2 the plate being secured to one edge of the stock by screws 3 and having attached on each side a segmental plate 4, each of which is graduated from O to 90 degrees, and which are secured to the stock by screws 5 and to the metallic frame 2 by screws 6, the plates being cut away to provide approximately semi-circular openings through which the bob may be observed.
One of the plates 4 is provided with an orificed boss 6 through which projects a screw 7, which, as shown in Fig. 2, is threaded at its inner end into the frame, the rear end of the boss being provided with a cut away portion 7 to receive the collar 12 of a screw 9 to which is attached a bob or weight 8. This bob has secured on each side of it a pointer 10 and 11, respectively, and these two traverse the graduated scales and thus enable the user to determine angles from either side of the implement.
It will be noted that a portioniof the bob lies within the edges of the graduated portion of the plates, and is thereby guided for swinging movement so that the wear of the collar 12 of the screw 9 will be reduced to the minimum. The pointers are also detachable from the bob so that in the event of injury, one or both may readily be replaced.
In order to apply the level attachment to the stock it will only be necessary to'cut away a portion of the latter to accommodate the bob through the range of its swing, and this may be accomplished by an ordinary mechanic. This is a feature of importance, inasmuch as when the stock has become useless from wear so that it is no longer true, a fresh straight-edge may readily be provided.
IVhat is claimed is A plumb level embodying a stock, a level attachment secured thereto and embodying graduated plates, a bob having its lower end arranged to work between the plates, pointers secured to the bob and arranged to traverse the graduated portions of the plates, a collar screw carried by the bob, a boss having a cut-away portion to receive the head of the screw, and a second screw passing through one of the plates, the boss and collar screw, and into the stock to suspend the bob for action.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
