IDENTIFICATION DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed July 20, 1910. Serial No. 572,922.
Patented July 11, 191.1.
To all whom it may concern: v
Beit known that I, J AMES HARRY THOMP- SON, citizenof the United States, residing 'in the county 'of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Identification Devices, of which the following is a specification. V
'-My present invention pertains to'identification devices for business transactions, and
more particularly to the kind of such devices which comprise a picture of the party to whom the, device is issued. 1
The object of my invention isflto provide alfl identification device having a wide range 0 ollowing description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings', accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which: a 4
Figure l is a perspective view illustrating my novel device as open and as carrying a railway mileage ticket. Fig. 2 is a .detail perspective view showing one mode of attachingaticket to the device. Fig. 3 is a section on line':33 of Fig. 1. Fig, 4 isa section online 44 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is aplan of the transparent picture retainer and protector. Fig. 6 is a detail view showing another manner in which a ticket can be detachably connected to the device.
Referring by letter to the said drawin and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 5 there of: A is a railway mileage ticket provided with a tongue a and designed when sold to y be given an individual number and to rethe formof a-folder-z.
usefulness, and embodying such a construction that the picture of the holder is chase,
which is a together at d, and
and othersmall articles. When desirablethe tongue a on the ticket and the socket e -in the body may be dispensed with, and the ticket provided with a male fastenera and the body-with a female fastener e as shown in Fig.6, or the ticket may be attached to the body in any other approved manner without involving departure from the of my invention as claimed.
The folder flap c is provided in its inner layer 9 with slits la, 2' and j, and at the time or issue is given a number corresponding to that the ticket and is provided at one or more (preferably two) places with the signature of the purchaser, as shown.
The picture l of the purchaser is fur nished by that party at the time of par and after being stamped or otherwise authenticated on its face by the proper railway .ofiicial, so that the authentication scope will be displayed, is placedagainst the face of the flap c and between the slits h i and 9'. Then the picture retainer and :protector m,
piece of suitable transparent material such as celluloid, mica or the like, is placed over the picture, and the lower and side edges of the said retainer-and, protector m are disposed in the slits h z'and 7', after which seals n orother suitable securing means are afiixed to the folder flap c of the body and to the retainer and protector m by adhesive or in any other, approved manner, and are stamped .in the manner illustrated or in any other approved manner to show their genuineness. With the icture' covered'and protected and secured in position in the manner illustrated and described, the picture is preserved and alteration thereof is precluded, and in the event that it is attempted,to substitute a spurious picture for the original, the seals 11 will be so afi'eeted that the fraud will be detected when the picture and device as a whole is subjected to even casual scrutiny.
- In the use of mynovel device, it will be observed that identi tween the ticket, the cries and the holder of the latter, and thatthe device may... be 'used repeatedly to .connect'the individual with a railway ticket or to establish the is established be ioo genuineness of the particular party 'by whom the device is carried. It willalso .be
observed that when used in connection with I a railway ticket, the device obviates the necessity of the conductor requesting samples of the signature of the party.
When deemed expedient the conditions governing the use of the device may be printed on the device or the ticket used in connection therewith or both.
Vhile I have shown and described one form of my invention, it is to be under stood that I am not limited to the details or the form or relative arrangement of parts disclosed, but that modifications may be made therein, Within the scope-"0t the appended claim Without departing from the spirit thereof. For instance the folder form of the body B does not constitute part of my invention, inasmuch as the body may be of any character consonant With the purpose of my invention and suited for use With a number of ditierent certificates, tickets or the like or alone as a mere identification device.
Having described my invention, What I senses claim and desire to secure by Letters-Yaten-t, is:
An identification device, comprising a body having in one side a slit and other slits spaced apart and extending at right angles to the first-named slit, a picture placed against the side of the body and between the said slits, a transparent retainer and protector arranged in front of the picture and having edge portions disposed in said. slits and also having an edge portion disposed against the side of the body, and authenticated seals afiixed to the side of the body and the retainer and protector, su
