To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES P. OCONNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crompton, in the county of Kent and State of Rhode'Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spoofing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to new and use ful improvements in spooling machines, and the primary object of the same is to provide new, novel, simple and efiicient means to prevent the bobbin over-running itself.
In spooling yarn one of the difficulties which presents itself is the tendency of the bobbin to over-run itself, which results in slack yarn between the bobbin and spool, and owing to the twist that there is in the yarn, kinks are formed, thereby producing a defective yarn on the spool. Further in cases where fine yarn is used the weight of the bobbin Where the latter is supported in a groove or trough in ordinary structures commonly employed, the yarn frequently breaks.
The present invention is designed to obviate the difliculties which ordinarily present themselves as above noted, and aims to providea sti icture which is automatic in operation and creates such tension on the yarn as will prevent the slack yarn with its disadvantages specified above.
In the drawings:-Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing the relative position of the invention applied to the frame of a spooling machine, the latter being broken away and in partial section, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the invention detached from the machine, Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44: of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the whirl .frlction retarding means, and 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of the friction retarding means for the yarn on the bobbin.
In the drawings, 1 designates the upper 10, provided with the whirl 11. Projectingtion 15. The vertical portion of arm 12 is.
formed with a cut-out portion 16, and with a seat 17 ,the shaft 14 extending across cutout portion 16 and having a bearing in seat 17.
A brake, preferably formed of wire is constructed to have a shoe 18, formed by looping the wire intermediate its ends, the ends of the looped portion extending outwardly at right angles to shoe 18, to form arms 19 located one above the other, each arm at an intermediate portion being coiled as at 20, to provide sockets or eyes for the reception of the shaft 1 1, the wire at the ends of the sockets being extended outwardly at right angles to the arms 19 to form second arms 21, which have a bifurcated weight 22, secured thereto in adjustable manner by means of a set screw 23.
The main brake is preferably formed from a sheet metal blank and comprises a shoe 24 which is constructed of a double thickness of the blank formed by doubling 01' folding the blank as depicted in Fig. 5, the inner ends of the doubled metal being spread outwardly and merge into a socket or eye member 25, which receives shaft 14, so as to have partial rotation thereabout. An arm 26, formed with a slot '27 is carried by the main brake, said arm being formed consequently cause the brake shoes 18 and 24 to engage the bobbin yarn and spindle whirl respectively.

and 31 designates a stop carried by the holder- 9 to engage the top of the. whirl 11 to restrict upward movement of the latter. In operation it will be observed that the shoe 18 due to the presence of the weight 22 maintains a uniform friction on the yarn of the full bobbins. The bent end 15 of the shaft 1 1 is rotatable or adjustable in the extension 13 ofthe arm 12, and is held in any position to which it may be adjusted by means of a set screw 32. It will thusbe obvious that the projection or end 13 of shaft 14 may be adjusted and held against movement in any predetermined position to limit the inward movement of the shoe upon 15 the yarn of the bobbin, so that aftera predetermined amount of .yarn has been removed from the bobbin, the shoe will notrest on the bobbin and consequently the yarn will be relieved 'rom that friction exerted by the shoe 18, but'as the bobbin would then be free to over-run itself, the second brake which is composed of the Weighted pivoted member carrying shoe 24 is resting on the whirl of the spindle and retarding the free running of the latter. Thus at all times regardless ofthe quantity of the yarn'on the bobbin, the latter will'be engaged by the brake or retarding means and prevented from over-running itself. Obviously as the 3g bobbin grows smaller its speed becomes greater, and the tension on the yarn'is proportionately increased, which makes it possible to dispense with the action of the brake mechanism 18, and to merely employ the brake mechanism 24. 2. In a spooling machine, in combination with the bobbin, the spindle thereof, and the spool, a pair of separate and independent adjustable tensiondevices, one for engagement with the yarn on the bobbin, and the other for continuous engagement with the spindle, and means for discontinuing the action of one of said devices for a predetermined period.
3. In a spooling machine, in combination with the bobbin, the spindle thereof, and the spool, an arm, a shaft carried by the arm having one end formed to provide a projection, means whereby said shaft may be adjusted, said shaft being inclined with respect to the spindle,-a member pivoted 65 on said shaft forengagement. with said projection thereof, said member being formed with a brake shoe at one end to engage the yarn on the bobbin, a, weight carried by the opposite end of saidmember, and a second brake member pivoted to the shaft formed with a shoe to engage. the spindle at one end and carrying a weight at its opposite end.

In a spooling machine, in combination with the bobbin, the spindle thereof, and the spool, an adjustable shaft carrying a projection at one end, a brake mechanlsm movable on said shaft and composed of two parts arranged at right angles to each other, one of said parts being formed to provide a brake shoe, a-weight adjustably carried by the other part, said last named part being adapted to engage said projection whereby to limit the movement of the shoe with respect to the bobbin, a second brake mechanism movable on the shaft and composed of two members arranged at right angles to each other, one of said members forming a brake shoe to engage with the spindle, and the other member. having an adjustable Weight carried thereby.
6. In a spooling machine, in combination with the bobbin, the spindle thereof, and the spool, an adjustable shaft carrying a projection at one end, and a pair of independent speed retarding devices mounted on said shaft, one of said devices being for continuous engagement withthe yarn on the spin dle, the other of said devices being for engagement with the bobbin and for engagement with said projection to limit the extent of movement of said device with respect a to the bobbin. I 7; In a spooling machine, in combination with the bobbin, the spindle thereof, and the spool, a shaft, a brake mounted on the shaft and formed of a section of sheet metal having two parts-arranged at right an Ice to each other, one of said parts being fol ed or doubled to provide a brake shoe of twice the thickness of the metal, an intermediate part of said metal being bent to form a socket to receive the shaft, and a weight adjustably mounted on the other of said right angular parts.
