WILLIAM JOHN VINCENT, OF POWIS, AND FREDERICK JAMES HANCOX, OF PENARTH, ENGLAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 27, 1911.
. Application filed May 1, 1909. Serial No. 493,271.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM JOHN VIN- CENT and FREDERICK JAMES HANCOX, subjects of the King of Great Britain, and residents, respectively, of Powis and Penarth, both in the county of Glamorgan, in England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rotary Reversible-Plunger Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to pumps of the kind in which a number of cylinders are formed in, or carried by a revolving drum and contain pistons which are operated by rollers engaging with a track eccentric to the drum, the pistons being thus reciprocated as the drum rotates. In previous devices of this kind the fluid has been supplied to the inner faces of the pistons. According to our invention it is applied to, and expelled by the outer faces.
The pump consists of a metal case of any desired shape thickness or size and may be made of two or more parts and bolted or otherwise fastened together as desired. Suitable inlets and outlets are cast on, or attached to said case of any desired shape or in any desired position.
Necessary shoes of any desired material are fitted or attached to said case in suitable positions to out off from inlets to outlets; these inlets and outlets may be fitted with non returnable valves acting automatically and with equal value in which-ever way the inner drum is rotating. An eccentric is recessed inor attached to-the inside face of case or where otherwise desired.
Within the aforementioned metal case is placed a cylindrical drum made of cast iron or any other desired metal and revolves with a central shaft-obtaining an equal working result rotating in either direction. This drum contains a number of circular or other desired shapedchambers, said chambers being recessed in the outer rim from periphery to depth required. Into each chamber is fitted a piston plunger made of brass or any other desired material and to which is connected a metal rod and the latter is attached toor connected by a metal crosshead, the latter running within the drum and parallel to the shaft aforementioned; each end of this crosshead passes through one side of cylindrical drum and upon each end is a fixed metal wheel or roller which latter revolves in or upon the eccentric recessed in or attached to the inside face of outer metal casing. The eccentric motion is thereby conveyed through aforementioned crossheadrod and piston and thereby gives a uniformity with both inward and outward strokes of plunger. The pump may be worked by an electric motor fitted to central shaft or by any other motive power desired.
Figure 1 drawing is a sectional elevation of outer metal case and elevatibn of cylindrical drum. Fig. 2 drawing is a section of outer metal case, cylindrical drumchamhers-pistons, piston rod, crosshead, wheels or rollers, central shaft, valves, inlets, outlets, shoes, eccentric recess.
The following are the reference letters Letters A outer metal case, letters B inlets, letters C outlet, letters D shoes, letters E valves, letters F eccentric recess, letters G cylindrical drum, letters H chambers, letters I pistons, letters J piston rods, letters K crosshead, letters L wheels or rollers, letters M central shaft.
What we do claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pump comprising in combination, a cylindrical casing having a single outlet opening, non-return flap valves adjacent said openlng and arranged to open in opposite direction with respect to each other, said casing having recessed chambers extending in opposite direction from said valves and extending completely. about the exterior of said casing, an abutment serving as a drum bearing and having stops for said flap valves, a drum bearing abutment diametrically opposed opposite said first named abutment and disposed at the terminals of said recessed chambers, inlets on opposite sides of said last named abutment, non-return flap valves for said inlets, a shaft in said casing, a rotary drum on said shaft bearing against said abutments, said drum plunger pistons are actuated upon rotation 10 having a plurality of radially disposed openof said drums.
