HENRY IPILE, OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, ASSIG-NOR OF ONE-THIRD T0 EDWIN F. ABEL, JR., OF NORFOLK COUNTY, VIRGINIA, AND ONE-THIRD TO SEARS M. RIPLEY,
OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA.
TIME-CHECK BOARD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be'it known that I, HENRY PILE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Time- Check Boards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to checking boards and systems for mustering of'numbers of employees at their places of employment at the first hour of reporting and also after a suspension of work or recess during the working day.
The object of my invention is to provide an apparatus to be located conveniently adjacent to the places of employment of the employees which may be opened and made accessible to them as they enter and afterward closed against alteration, on which may be indicated the presence or absence of each employee at either of the reporting hours.
A further object of my invention is to produce checks or disks on both sides of which may be displayed the numeral corresponding to the number of the employee which each represents, one face of each bearing the legend A. M. and being distinctively colored to indicate the morning hour for reporting, and the opposite side being distinctively colored in contrast with its reverse face, and bearing the legend P. M., and a further object thereof is to provide a wall case or box preferably provided with a transparent front or door within which is mounted suitable hangers having numbers to correspond with the numbers of the disks, adapted to reversibly support said disks, upon which they are adapted to be continuously hung except when reversed by the employees to which they correspond when they report.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a more simple, cheap and efficient time checking board than has heretofore been produced.
To these ends, my invention includes the combinations and arrangement of component parts to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the'accompanying drawings illustrating my invention, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my check board; Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view Specification of Letters Patent.

thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the opposite faces of the checks or disks hung therein.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 indi' cates a rectangular box or case, adapted to be secured at convenient height upon a wall or stand, having the rear wall 2 upon which checks or disks may be held, side walls 8 and the front wall 4 which is preferably hinged or otherwise removably secured thereon and provided with a suitable lock 5. The front or door 4 is also preferably glazed to permit the disks to be observed after the door has been closed. The rear wall 2 is provided with a plurality of hooks or hangers 6 which are consecutively numbered to correspond with the numbers of the disks to be hung thereon as hereinafter described.
The checks employed in my device in connection with the case above described are more clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and comprise a circular or rectangular disk 7 upon each face of which is inscribed at 8 a numerical character corresponding to the number of the hook on the rear wall of the case 1 upon which each disk is designed to be hung.
One face 9 of each disk is distinctively colored to indicate the morning muster, and such face bears the legend A. M.. The reverse face 11 thereof is colored in contrast therewith and has the legend P. M.- inscribed thereon to indicate a later muster. Each disk has an orifice or .eyelet 10 by which it is hung upon the hooks 6 in the case 1.
The system and operation of my invention is as follows: At the morning muster of employees, all the disks upon the hooks in the case, having been previously arranged to expose their P. M. faces 11, the box is opened to permit access by the employees who pass before it under proper surveillance, and each employee reverses the face of the disk corresponding to his number upon the hook, thus exposing the A. M. face 9 to view. By reason of the contrast in color between the faces of such disks and the other distinguishing marks thereon, it is readily apparent which ones have or have not been arranged to indicate the presence of the corresponding employee, and the record disclosed thereby may be transferred to a suitable time book for permanent record, and
from the specific exemplification the same operation performed for the afternoon muster when the disks would be reversed by the employees to expose the P. M. face to view.
The construction and operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description and by reference to the accompanying drawings, and it will be appreciated that the parts and combinations thereof may be varied within a wide range shown without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a case, of a plurality of disks loosely mounted therein Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing, the Commissioner of Patents,
adapted to be reversed to expose their opposite faces, the same character on both faces of each disk differing from the characters on all the other disks, all of said disks having similar distinctive faces on one side and a common time indicating character thereon, and common reverse faces contrasting with the opposite faces and a different common time indicating character thereon, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY PILE.
