To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEssE M. PAYNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phoenix city, in the county of Lee and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dyeing-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a central verticatl longitudinal section through my improved dyeing machine and the beam operating mechanism; Fig. 2 is a similar view taken at right angles thereto and on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a similar view on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a similar view on the line 44 showing the beam operating mechanism. Fig. 5 is a" cross sectional view on the line 55 -of Fig.1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes a large outer tank which is adapted to contain dye and in which the dye is heated. Arranged in-the tank 1 is a dyeing tank 2 in which-is revolubly mounted a yarn holding beam or reel 3. The beam or reel 3 comprises a centrally disposed shaft 4, on which and spaced a suitable distance apart are circular heads or disks 5 and 6. On the inner sides of the disks 5 and 6 are formed annular ribs or flanges 7 in which are formed a series of triangular seat-s or notches 8 with which are engaged the 0pposite ends of a series of cross bars or slats 9 upon which the yarn to be dyed is wound. The slats 8 are spaced a suitable distance apart to permit the dye to flow freely through the same and through the yarn wound thereon.
The disks or heads 5 and 6 are held in position on the shaft 4: by nuts 10 and on the outer side of the head 6 is formed an annular concentric flange 11 which is threaded interiorly as shown. The interiorly threaded flange 11 is adapted to be screwed into engagement with the enlarged threaded inner end 12 of a combined tubular reel or' beam operating shaft and dye injecting nozzle 13 through which dye is discharged into the reel or beam while the same is being revolved. The enlarged inner end 12 of the shaft 13 has formed thereon an annular radially projecting stop flange 14: in which is arranged an annular gasket or packing ring 15 against which the outer end of the flange 11 on the head 6 of the reel is screwed thereby forming a fluid tight connection be tween these parts. In the discharge end of the shaft 13 is formed an apertured bearing bar or spider 16 with which the adjacent end of the shaft 4 is engaged, the opposite end of said shaft having a revoluble engagement with a bearing notch 17 formed in a supporting bar 18 arranged across the tank 2 and having its opposite ends engaged with a suitable supporting cleat 19 arranged on the adjacent side of the tank as shown.
The tubular shaft or nozzle 13 is revolubly supported at its inner end where it enters the tank 2 in a stuffing box 20 while the outer portion of the shaft or nozzle where the same passes through the side of the tank 1 is engaged with a stufling box 21 arranged in and secured to said side of the tank 1 as shown. To the outer end of the shaft or nozzle 13 is connected a dye supply pipe23 which may be connected with a suitable pumping mechanism (not shown) which is so arranged that after an air-tight lid or cover has been placed on the dye tank 2, by the manipulation of theproper valves or by reversing the pump, the dye liquor may be forced through the pipe 23 and the nozzle or shaft 13 outwardly through the reel of yarn into the tank 2, or may be driven in the reverse direction from the tank 2 through the reel and shaft back into the tank 1. The supply pipe 23 is connected to the end of the shaft 13 by a packing joint or union 2 1.
The shaft or nozzle 13 is revolved to impart the required rotary movement to the reel by means of a suitably driven worm shaft 25 which is revolubly mounted in bars 26 and is operatively engaged with a worm gear 27 fixedly mounted on the outer end of the shaft or nozzle 13. By thus constructing and arranging the reel operating mechanism the reel or beam may be revolved at the desired speed in the tank 2 at the same time drawings, the enlarged end or head 12 of the shaft 13 is formed with a continuous annular flaring funnel-shaped discharge open end leading to the concentric securing flange 11, whereby the dyeing liquid is freely and uninterruptedly directed to the material to be operated upon. After entering the reel or beam the dye passes out be tween the bars or slats 9 and through the yarn wound thereon thus evenly dyeing the latter and preventing any settling of the dye at the lower part of the reel or beam.
It will be observed that in my present de- Vice, the driving shaft and nozzle is secured directly to the drum, or dyeing beam without the use of bolts so that. these parts may be expeditiously attached and detached and the construction is such that the, act of attaching the nozzle, to the beam simultaneously presses the packing against the flange on; the beam evenly throughout its extent. The spider in the nozzle furnishes asup-- port for the end of the shaft so that the weight. of the beam and the yarn thereon will not be thrown upon the threaded connection between the nozzle and the beam and, consequently, wear and loosening of that connection will not readily occur. It will also be noted that the enlarged end of the nozzle fits closely within the central opening the side of the tank so that the head of the beam is brought close; to said 1 7 side, of the tank and, a steady support. for
,the tank 2 by any suitable means, as by a pipe 30, with which will be combined a valve not necessary to be shown.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
A dyeing apparatus comprising an inner fiand an outer tank, a shaft, a reel on the shaft consisting of flanged disks having f spaced notches adapted to receive slats Ftherein, one of the disks having an annular ginteriorly screw threaded projecting con-- .centric flange, a rotatable nozzle extending through the walls of the. inner and outer tanks having a flaring screw threaded end provided with a stop flange to: connect with said concentric flange, saidfflarin-g end of :said nozzle being spaced from said concentrio flanged disk, a spider arranged within said nozzle having one end of: said shaft mounted therein and an opening in the concentric flanged disk providing communication between the interior' of the reel and the nozzle.
