JOHN H. COOK, OF HAGERSTOWN, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO HAG'EBJSTOWN AGRI- CULTURAL IMPLEMENT MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE,
Letters PM No. 99,643, dated Februar 8, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE HAY-RAKES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, JOHN H. 0001:, of Hagerstown, \Vashington county, State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Horse-Rakes; and I do hereby declare the following to he an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in making a square groove on the edge of the rake-head, so that the angular ends of the rake-teeth may fit into the groove, operate in it, and be more firmly held in their place without wabbling, and a corresponding angular plate is screwed on to the rake-head, to secure every two teeth firmly in the groove.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I
will proceed to describe it, as follows:
A is the square groove, cut on the edge of the rakehead B, in which the angular ends of the rake-teeth C are fitted and operate,'and by which means the teeth 0 are held more firmly and regularly.
After the angular ends of the teeth C are fitted in the groove, an angularplate, D, is screwed on to the rake-head permanently, so as to sccurethe ends of two teeth, 0, firmly in the groove.
The plate D is made of cast-iron, scalloped on its front side, and having two flanges, .E E, at each end, at right angles with the front of the plate, these flanges fit flat upon the upper side of the rake-head, and hold the angular ends of every two teeth, C, firmly in the groove A, whilst the teeth 0 operate between the flanges E E.
I am aware that angular ends of rake-teeth are held down upon the upper side of the rake-head by cylindrical hinges or boxes, in which those ends operate, but these I do not use or claim; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The angular plate D E, to hold the ends of the raketeeth securely in the groove, when constructed and combined with the rake-head, in the manner herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN H. COOK.
