Description

THADDEUS GALVIN, 015 DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO DETROIT STEERING WHEEL & WIND SHIELD COMPANY, OF DETROIT; MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
WIND-SHIELD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TI-IADDEUS GALVIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVind- Shields, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates generally to wind shields for automobiles, and particularly to anti-rattling means for the transparent panels.
The invention consists in the construction of the anti-rattling mechanism, in the peculiar arrangement and combination of parts, and in various details of construction, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings illustrating the invention,--Figure 1 is a View in front elevation of a wind shield section, with my improved anti-rattling means applied; Fig. 2 is a sectional perspective View of the clamp and connecting means; Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the cushioning device; and Fig. 4 is a similar view of one of the clamp members.
In the drawings thus briefly described, A represents one of the usual sections of a folding wind shield, consisting primarilyof a suitable metallic frame B, including the meeting rail G and the transparent panel 1) of glass. The panel is fitted within longitudinal grooves a formed in the inner faces of the frame sides, and it frequently happens that there is suflicient play to cause rattling of the parts. This I have avoided by clamp-ing mechanism, constituting the anti-rattling means, consisting of a plurality of clamps, as E, and preferably cushioning material interposed between the clamps and the panel. The preferred form of clamp is as illustrated, comprising clamping plates F and G, the lower or frame-em gaging portions of which are preferably concaved to conform to the external configuration of the frame sides. These plates are arranged upon opposite sides of the panel,

and each is preferably apertured to register with a transverse opening 5 formed in the panel near the frame side.
H is a connection, in the form of a screw, uniting the plates and extending through the aperture in the glass, the construction being such that upon screwing in the connection a clamping engagement will be effected between the glass and the frame.
Interposed between each clamp and the panel is a layer of cushioning material I, and within the opening in the glass is arranged a bushing J of a similar material. Preferably, one of the clamp members, as F, carries at its inner end an internally screwthreaded nipple L, of a size to fit within the bushing, so that when the parts are assembled a more rigid construction is obtained.
The meeting rail C of usual channel cross section has its side portions preferably convex, so as to correspond with the curve of the other portions of the frame sides, and provide a curved portion for the engagement of the clamp.
What I claim as my invention is,-
1. In a wind shield, the combination with a transparent panel, apertured in proximity to the frame, of apertured clamping plates upon opposite sides of the panel registering with the opening therein and bearing at their outer ends against the frame, a bushing of yielding material within the panel opening, cushioning material between each clamp and the panel, and a connection between the clamps projecting through the bushing.
2. In a wind shield, the combination with a transparent panel, apertured in proximity to the frame, of apertured clamping plates upon opposite sides of the panel registering with the opening therein and bearing at their outer ends against the frame, an internally screw-threaded nipple carried by one of the clamping members engaging the panel opening, a yielding bushing surrounding the nipple, cushioning material between each clamp and the panel, and a screw connecting the clamping members and engaging the nipple.
3. In a wind shield. the combination with a frame, of a transparent panel apertured In testimony whereof I affix my signature in proximity to the frame, apertured clampin presence of two witnesses. ing plates upon opposite sides of the panel having their apertures registering with the THADDEUS GALVIN. 5 openings in the transparent panel and having their outer ends shaped to engage the Witnesses: frame, and a connection between the clamps JAMES P. BARRY, passing through said apertures. W. J. BELKNAP.
