TILT-HAMMER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I-IUGo AvnRDUNG, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at Hckeswagen, in the Province of the Rhine, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented a certain new and useful Tilt-Hammer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved power or tilt hammer.
In tilt hammers it is already known to i provide an air chamber above in which the air is compressed on the upstroke.
The present invention consists essentially in providing this air chamber with control valves, which effect the regulation of the air compression on the upstroke and the production of a partial vacuum on the downstroke, and thereby permit of the regulation of the strength of the stroke and also the holding up of the hammer without putting the driving apparatus out of gear.
In the accompanying drawinga tilt hammer is illustrated by way of example in Figure l in vertical section. Fig. 2 shows a detail of the control mechanism viewed from above.
The letter A designates the frame of the machine.
The block a is raised in the well known manner by means of a double lever b, which is raised by the revolving cam c. The outer end b of the lever b, is connected by a pin r to a link s, which is rotatable on the shaft t; the latter being fixed to the frame A. The
cylindrical block moves telescopically in the cylinder d, in which at the top there is suspended the cylinder or chamber The block cz is hollowed out above in such a manner that its wall g can tightly inclose the air chamber f. In connection with this chamber are the valves h and z' which are connected with the hammer lever b through a series of levers and links so that they move uniformly with the block a. In order to enable a different adjustment of the valves by hand to be made, the two armed lever lc m is revolubly supported upon a fulcrum or pivot 0, which (as shown in Fig. 2) is so connected with the hand lever p, that it can assume various positions. The arm m of the lever 7c m is formed as a spring so that as soon as the valve 7L c' has reached its seating, thearm bends and supports the closing effort of the valve. j

cam c is to be in the uppermost position, then the hand lever p is so adjusted that the valve L closes immediately as soon as the block commences to descend, so that between the block and the air chamber 7 there is formed a vacuum which will retain the block, after a very short downward motion, suspended above. By means of a suitable adjustment of the hand lever p the perio'd of time duringv which the valve la, closes may be prolonged and in this manner the stroke may be weakened as much as is desired. On the other hand the hand lever p can be so adjusted that the valve i closes sooner or later on the rise of the block, so that there is formed in the air chamber j" a larger or smaller air compression which on the following stroke of the hammer more or less powerfully assists the blow. The latter' effect takes place moreover also by reason of the action of the spring lever arm m which has been bent on the upstroke. In short, it is consequently possible either to attain the simple stroke action or to weaken this stroke and even to keep the block suspended, or on the other hand to strengthen the stroke by various air compressions, and in addition also by the spring tension of the arm m.
The construction of the tilt hammer itself may be of any known kind. Further it should be remarked that in the example above set forth properly speaking two air spaces are combined, of which the one is in the air chamber f and the other is between the block and the aforesaid air chamber. The simplest construction is one in which only a single air space is provided possessing only one valve. But such a hammer would not admit of the variety of workin@- strokes above described.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:
l. In a tilt hammer a vertical cylinder, a block carrying a hammer having a tubular upper part and movable in said cylinder, a second cylinder having an air chamber adapted to engage the tubular portion of said block, valves in said air chamber, a hammer lever connected to said partly tubular block and to said valves, and means for operating said hammer lever, as specified.
2. In a tilt-hammer, a hammer lever, means to actuate said lever, a cylinder, a hammer block vertically movable in said cylinder by said hammer lever and having a tubular upper part, an air chamber in said cylinder spaced from the cylinder walls above said block and adapted to occupy the tubular portion, valves in said air chamber, a series of levers and links to connect said valves vvith said hammer lever, and means to adjust said valves by shifting the fulcruln of al lever in said series.
