STOVE-TOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS F. OsTRANDER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Decatur, Macon county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Tops, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in stove tops, the object of my invention being to construct a stove top that may be secured to the body of the stove in such manner that the connecting bolts lie outside of the combustion chamber, to construct an expansion plate for stove tops that may be readily re` moved when deteriorated by use and replaced by a new one, the expansion plate being' so arranged as to receive and hold a damper for controlling the draft of the stove and to construct a defiecting plate to be secured in p lace by the expansion plate.
For the above purposes my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter -more fully described, pointed out in the claims and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan of the stove with the lids removed, portions of the top being broken away so as to more clearly illustrate the construction of the stove; Fig. 2 is a vertical, sectional elevation through the stove top and a portion of the stove body taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 2 and taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. t is a vertical, sectional elevation taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a vertical, sectional elevation taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings: 1 designates the body of the stove and 2 the stove top.
3 designates the bowl-shaped extension of the top forming a part of the combustion chamberwhen united with the stove body.
4 designates the feed chute which is formed integral with the part 3 of the top and 5 designates an integral extension of the top constituting the draft opening.
6 designates a portion of the stove pipe collar which is formed integral with the eX- tension 5.
7 designates the expansion plate which is secured tothe part 3 by means of the bolts 8, the part 7 being provided with a stove pipe collar sect-ion 9.
10 designates bearings formed in the part 5 to receive the journals of a cast damper 1l and 12 designates an integral damper handle, a portion of the handle forming a' journal for supporting one end of the damper.
13 designates a de-flecting plate for dividing the iame and heat from the combustion chamber so that the flame will not pass directly upwardly through the stove pipe but be checked and directed to travel about the combustion chamber.
The deflector 13 is provided at its top with a shoulder 14 which is held by an integral shoulder 15 formed on the bottom facel of the expansion plate 7 and at its bottom the de- Hector is held by engagement with the lowermost margin of the extension 5 and by engagement with the lugs 16 formed on the upper face of the top 1.
As shown the body of the stove is round and the' general conformation of the bottom of the stove top is round. The stove body is provided with an upwardly projecting annular flange 17 and the stove top is provided with an annular channel 18 which embraces the flange 17 of the stove body to form a tight joint between the stove body and the stove top. Formed in the stove top are the openings 19 and on the bottom side of the top surrounding said openings are the integral bosses 20. Stove bolts 21 are positioned with their heads upwardly through said openings.
22 designates perforated ears formed integral with the body of the stove coincident with the openings 19. The threaded portions of the bolts extend through said perforated ears and the nuts 23 are positioned on the threaded ends of said bolts and are manipulated to draw the top securely downwardly over the stove body. For securing the expansion plate 7 to the top so that the bolts 8 are out of reach of the flame and heat of the stove the expansion plate at each of its ends extends over the part 5 of the stove top as shown in Fig. 4.
A stove top constructed as shown is connected with the stove body by means of screws or other attaching devices outside of the stove body. The expansion plate is connected with the top also by means of screws or other attaching devices outside the body of the stove.
By reason of the construction of the stove top and the removable expansion plate a removable cast damper having integral journals may be employed and by reason of the construction of the stove body and the eX- pansion plate a removable deflector is enr ployed to bafie the flame and heat in their travel from the combustion chamber to the stove pipe.
To persons familiar With the art it is known that the rear or expansion plate of the stove top is the part most likely to become warped out of shape by reason of the heat from the stove. By my construction in case the said plate becomes Warped it may be readily removed and replaced by a new one Without affecting the balance of the top of the stove.
I claim:
1. In combination with a stove body, a stove top, means for connecting` the top to said body in planes outside said body, said top being provided with a draft extension, a damper supported in said extension and an expansion plate removably secured to the top and arranged to hold said damper in place.
2. In a stove of the class described, a stove body, a stove top, bolts for securing the top to the body, said bolts being arranged outside of said body, a draft extension for said stove top, a damper supported by said draft extension, a detachable expansion plate secured to the top and arranged to hold said damper in place, bolts for securing said eX- pansion plate to the top, said expansion plate extending beyond said draft eXtension and said bolts occupying positions outbeing divided on a median line through' said opening, and a damper journaled in said draft extension and held in place by said expansion plate, substantially as shown.
