DESIRE NADEAU, OF C OHASSET, MINNESOTA.
COVER-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Dnsmn NADEAU, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Cohasset, in the county of Itasca and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover-Fae teners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skill-ed in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvement-s in fasteners or sealing devices for the covers of wooden receptacles.
One ob ect of the mventlon is to provide a fastener or sealing device of this character which will prevent the receptacle from being opened without knowledge of the purchaser.
Another object is to provide a cover fas tener for wooden buckets or like receptacles, which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, efficient and reliable in operation and which may be quickly and easily applied to the receptacle.
IVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully de scribed and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a candy pail showing the application of my improved fastening devices. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through one side of the pail and a portion of the cover showing more clearly the construction and arrangement of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the blank from which the fastener is formed; Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the first step in the construction of the fastener; Fig. 5 is a similar view of the fastener as it appears when ready to be ap- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 27 1911 Application filed December 8, 1910.
Serial No. 596,262.
I right angles to form a combined supporting lug and nail clenching plate I which is adapted to engage the upper edge of the receptacle as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 6 of the drawing.
On the double or folded receptacle engaging portions 3 are formed alined nail holes 5 through which and through the side of the receptacle is driven an attaching nail 6 the inner end of which is clenched into the inner surface of the side of the receptacle as shown. When thus secured to the receptacle the combined lug and nail clenching plate will engage the upper edge of the receptacle as hereinbefore described. When the fastener has thus been secured to the receptacle the cover is applied thereto and rests on the lugs 4 of the fasteners. The projecting upper end of the outer member ofthe folded receptacle engaging portion projects across the outer edge of the cover and a suit able distance above the same to form a cover fastening lug 7 which is bent inwardly and down into engagement with the upper side of the cover as shown.
In the lug 7 of the fastener is formed a nail hole 8 through which and through the adjacent portion of the cover is driven a fastening nail 9 the inner end of which when driven through the cover comes into engagement with the combined clenching plate and lug 4 which turns the point of the nail back into the inner side of the cover thereby clenching the nail and firmly securing the cover engaging end 7 of the fastener in operative position to securely fasten the cover onto the pail. When the cover is thus fastened it will be obvious that the same cannot be removed without breaking either the cover or the fastening devices thus indicating that the goods contained in the receptacle have been tampered with.
My invention is intended primarily for use in connection with candy transporting receptacles but may be applied to any receptacle formed of wood or similar material, and any number of fasteners may be used for each receptacle.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. The combination with a receptacle and cover thereof, of a fastening device having a laterally extending lug forming a continuation thereof and adapted to engage with the upper edge of the receptacle upon which the cover bears, means for fastening the plate to the latter below said lug, the opposite end of said plate extending above the cover and adapted to be bent over the edge of the same and upon the upper surface thereof, and fastening nails adapted to be driven through said extended portion of the plate and through the cover, said nails being of sufficient length to be deflected and clenched into the under surface of the cover when driven against the lug.
2. The combination with a receptacle and cover thereof, of a fastening device composed of a single strip of metal folded upon itself at one end, a laterally extending lug forming a continuation of one end of the plate and disposed between the extremity of the folded portion and the opposite end of the same, said lug being adapted for engagement with the upper edge of the receptacle upon which the cover bears, means for fastening the plate to the side of said receptacle, the opposite end of said strip extending above the cover when attached to the receptacle and adapted to be bent over the edge of the cover and upon the upper surface of the latter, and fastening nails adapted to be driven through said extending and overlapping portion of the plate and through the cover, the said nails being of sufiicient length to be deflected and clenched into the under surface of the cover when forced against the lug.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
