THE NORRIS PETERS co.. wAsl-rmarou, v. c.
- T STATEE CHARLES F. GARRETSON, OF KNOXVILLE, IOWA.
DENTAL APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 27, 1911.
Application filed September 6, 1910. Serial No. 580,747.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. GARRET- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Marion and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Dental Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to and is an improvement on the dental articulator for which United States Letters Patent No. 497,122 were granted to me May 9, 1893, and consists in arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a flat or top View of the ap' paratus that shows the forms and posit-ions of all the parts relative to each other as required for practical use. Fig. 2 shows the apparatus in an inverted position and the notches in the bar that carries the chin pad and is adjustably connected with the frame that supports the pad. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view that shows the adjustable combinations of the notched bar and the frame adapted to be detachably connected to a persons head.
The numeral 10 designates the base of the frame. It is rigid metal and curved and has a bearing 12 at its center and under side for the bar 13 that has teeth on its under side as shown in Fig. 2 and that extends horizontally through said bearing. It also has a tubular integral bearing for a spring-actuated plug 14 that carries a detent 15 to engage teeth on the lower side of the bar 13. The lower part of the plug 1 is flat and extends down through the elongated slot 16 in the toothed bar 13. A crossbar or plate 17 is fixed to the under side of the base or frame 10 as required to retain the slidable notched bar 13 at right angles to the said frame 10 at all times. A chin pad 18 is formed on or fixed to the one end of the notched bar 13 and a knob 19 to its other end.
Curved bars 20 are fixed by rivets c to the curved ends of the base frame 10 and terminate in parallel straight extensions 21. Ear tips 22 are fixed to the ends of the extensions 21 to enter a persons ears as required for connecting the apparatus with a persons head for practical use. A leather strap 23 is pivoted to one of the curved'bar extensions 21 and its free end portion provided with a plurality of pin holes a for adjustably connecting with a fixed pin Z2 projecting outward and inclined from the mating extension 21 as shown in Fig. 3.
In practical use my invention is attached to a persons head by means of the strap 23 being placed over a persons head and the tips 22 placed in the ears. The chin pad 18 is then placed against the lower jaw and adjusted as required to retain the jaw in its natural position. This is advantageously accomplished by pressing on the plug 14: to release the detent 15 from teeth in the bar 1.3 and then moving said bar and the pad to its proper position and relaxing the pressure on the said plug to allow the force of the spring to draw the detent 15 to engage the teeth in the bar 13 as shown in Fig. 3.
What is professionally termed as the bite depends upon the proper adjustment of the pad 18 relative to the jaw and the frame 10 and both hands of the operator can be used for so doing.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An improved dental apparatus, comprising a base member formed with a bearing, a bar slidingly mounted in said bearing, said bar toothed on its lower face, a chin pad on one end portion of said bar, said base member also formed with a bearing intersecting the first bearing, a plug mounted in the latter bearing and formed with a fork straddling said bar, a detent earned by said fork and adapted to engage the toothed face of the bar, yielding pressure devices mounted in the base member and adapted to move the plug in one direct1on, a frame bar fixed at its center to the base member, ear tips fixed to extremities of sa1d frame bar, and a head strap adjustably connecting end portions of said frame bar.
2. An improved dental apparatus, comprising a base member formed with bearings at right angles to each other, a chin bar slidingly mounted in one of said bearings, a detent device slidingly mounted in the other bearing and adapted to engage said chin bar, the detent device being spring-held in one direction and movable at right angles to the chin bar, a chm pad on one end of said chin bar and a knob on the and adjustable connection to the opposite opposite end of said bar, a U-shaped frame end portion of said frame bar.
bar fixed at its center to said base member,
inwardly extending ear tips mounted on the CHARLES GARRETSON' extremities of said frame bar, and a head Witnesses:
strap fixed at one end to one end portion of G. K. HART,
the frame bar and adapted for detachable S. S. BYBEE.
