To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLARENCE H. Gownnr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Hanover, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Turners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to leaf turners and the principal object of the same is to provide a portable leaf turner that may be used in connection with pianos or the like and which includes a case in the form of a book and a turner therein, the case being also adapted to retain sheet music so that transportation thereof is facilitated. In addition to the foregoing prominent objects, the invention also contemplates a novel type of pneumatically actuated turner that is simple in construction and easily operated and which may be adjusted in the case to accommodate sheets of various sizes.

In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarilysusceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of the improved case and turner, the case being shown open. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the case closed. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of the interior of the case, the turner being shown in section. Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4 L, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of a latch mechanism for the turning arms. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 66, Fig. 1.

The improved leaf turner comprises a case in the form of a book provided with a flat back 1 and covers 2-which are hinged to said back and provided with edge flanges which permit the covers to inclose the turning mechanism and also to provide receptacles in which sheet music or the like may be retained. Each cover has a resilient clip 3 on its inner surface for holding the sheets to the covers.

The back 1 is provided with upper and lower lugs 4 which project at right angles from the inner surface thereof and said lugs are provided with a transverse opening 5 connection 23 at one end with plate 16.

for the reception of the ends of a shaft 6. Said lugs are also provided with a threaded longitudinal opening 7 that intersects the openings 5. Thumb-screws 8 engage the openings 7 to lock the shaft 6 to the lugs 4. Shaft 6 extends transversely through similar lugs 9 that project laterally from a supporting block 10, said lugs 9 being equipped with thumb screws 11 for adjustably locking the block 10 to said shaft. Sleeves 12 are loosely mounted on shaft 6 between lugs 9 and are prevented from longitudinal movement thereby. Each sleeve is provided with a sheet-turning arm 13 equipped with pivotally suspended sheet-engaging clasps 1d. The clasps 1d are loose on said arms to permit adjustments longitudinally thereof. A spring 15 is coiled about each sleeve 12. one end of said spring being suitably fastened to the arm carried by the sleeve, the other end of the spring being fastened to block 10. Said springs are constantly exerting a pressure tending to rotate the sleeves 12 on shaft 6 thus swinging the arms 13 from the righthand cover to the left hand cover.

The supporting block 10 has a plate 16 pivotally mounted on one longitudinal edge thereof, said plate being provided with a slot 17 which receives the arms 13. A dog 18 is pivotally connected to plate 16 and normally retains the arms 13 in said slot 17. Said dog is provided with a lateral end lug 19 that engages a guide slot 20 of plate 16 to limit the pivotal movement of said dog. The upper end of plate 16 has a spring connection 21 with block 10, the said spring opposing pivotal movement of said plate in one direction. A tripping lever 22 is pivotally connected to block 10 and has a lli rlik 1e other end of said lever is provided with an outstanding flattened head or flange 24 that rests on the projected end of a plunger 25 that is slidable in a pneumatic cylinder 26 carried by block 10. Cylinder 26 has a nipple connection 2'? with a flexible tube 28 that extends through suitable guides car ried by the case and connects with a bulb 29 that is seated in a flat receptacle 30 the cover 31 of which is in the form of a foot treadle having a projection 32 which compresses bulb 29 when rocked onto said re ceptacle.

.As is shown more clearly in Fig. 6 of the accompanying drawings, the receptacle 30 is formed in one portion of a rectangular block 30, and the cover 31, is hinged to a transverse strip 30 in the rear end of said receptacle. The forward edge of the cover 31 is free, so that the treadle can be manipulated by resting the heel on the block 30 and pressing on the cover 31 with the ball of the foot, so that the projection 32 will compress the bulb 29. As will be obvious, when the pressure of the foot is removed from the cover 31 the expansion of the bulb 29 will restore said cover to its original raised position relative to the receptacle 80.

As is shown in detail in Fig. 5, the slot of plate 16 is angular and the said plate has a lip 33 that is beveled on the inner surface and overhangs said slot. When the arms 13 are in said slot, one arm rests on the base on the outer side of said projection and is retained in such position by the dog 18. The other arm or arms, rests on said base on the inner side of said projection. ith this in mind, it will be seen that by compressing bulb 2E), plunger 25 will rock tripping lever 22 so that said lever will rock plate 16 downward against the tension of spring 21, thereby releasing the outer arm 13 so that said arm, actuated by spring 15 which auto- -matically rotates the sleeve 12 of said arm,

will swing to an opposite position to that in which it was held while in the slot of plate 16. lVhile the first arm is being released, the other arm or arms are confined to the slot 17 of plate 16. by means of the overhanging lip 33, and when plate 16 is returned to the original position by spring 21, another arm will assume the position occupied by the first arm so that when plate 16 is again rocked by compressing bulb 29,

the second arm will be automatically released. Dog 18 has its upper edge beveled which facilitates manually turning the arms 13 to secure them in slot 17 of plate 16.

it will be seen that this invention pro vides a simple but convenient case in which the turning mechanism is inclosed so that transportation of said mechanism is facilitated as well as providing means for storing sheet music. It will also be seen that the ase provides a music stand that can be readily set in operative position upon a piano or other musical instrument so that the turning mechanism can be operated by the performer.

Yvhat I claim as my invention is A eaf turner comprising a support, a shaft carried thereby, a base block on said shaft, arms rotatable on said shaft, a plate pivoted to said block, said plate being provided with a recess for the reception of said arms, and having a lip overhanging said recess said plate being provided with a guiding slot, a dog pivoted to said plate and adapted to normally retain said arms in said recess, a laterally projecting dog carried. by said lug and engaging said guiding slot to limit the pivotal movements of said dog, a spring connecting said block to said plate for normally retaining said plate in position to hold said arms in said recess, and means for operating said device.
