To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, I'IERMAN J. BREN- NECKE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eyeglass- Holders, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to reels or winding mechanism for chains or cords for eyeglass holders or similar devices, and designs to provide an improved device of this character, which can be snugly secured against the clothing, so that it will be properly held to insure the operation. of the pawl and ratchet mechanism for holding the take-up drum for the chain or cord, and so that it will not be unsightly and project unnecessarily from the clothing.

The invention also designs to provide a reel-holder of improved construction.

The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.

In the drawing: Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a reel-holder embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, the cover being removed. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the drum and parts secured thereto. Fig. 4 is a front elevation, the reel with its connected parts and the cover being removed. Fig. 5 is an edge view. Fig. 6 is a section taken on line 66- of Fig. 1.

The case comprises a shell or case-section b and a slip-cover 0 fitted to a forwardly extending rimor flange b on the case-section Z). A. chain-opening b is formed in this flange and the cover. The back of the shell is provided with a backwardly extending portion 6 of the case-section b, the periphery of which is of smaller diameter than the front portion of the case, so that an annular space or recess will be left around the projecting back-portion of the shell for the attachment of means, such as a pin 72, whereby the holder may be secured to the clothing of a person. This pin comprises a spring loop at one end, which has its terminal secured to the back of the case-section outside of the projecting wall Z2 and a catch 10 is adapted to secure the free end of the pin in operative position. This catch 10 is formed of wire and is secured to the back of the case outwardly of the projecting portion 6 of the back-wall of case-section b.

Resultantly, the pin 79 may be disposed in close proximity to the projecting back of the case and the device will, therefore be held firmly, because it will be held in im mediate contact with its support or clothing to which it is attached, and will be securely held in its assigned position, so that it will not be free to move pivotally about the pin. This construct-ion, further permits the outer portion of the case to be made comparatively narrow, so that the device will not be unsightly in appearance. This feature of providing a recess in or around the back for the pin-attaohment, constitutes an important feature of the invention.

A stud s is secured in the case and projects forwardly from the back thereof. A disk 71. is journaled on said stud, and a drum 0, having flanges 0, is secured on and extends around said disk. This drum is adapted to wind up a flexible element, such as a chain (Z having a suitable catch at its free end for connecting it to a pair of eyeglasses.

A spiral spring 8 is disposed in the chamber formed within the projecting wall 5 of the case and has its outer end suitably secured to said wall and its inner end provided with a loop Z adapted to receive either of a series of spurs m projecting backwardly from the drum-disk n. This spring serves to operate the drum in one direction to take up the chain. Mechanism is provided for holding the drum against being rotated by the spring, and comprises a ratchet-wheel g, which is mounted on the squared end 8 of the stud s and a pawl 79, which is pivoted to the disk 72, as at 79 has a spur p for engaging the ratchet-teeth and has its free end weighted. This pawl and ratchet mechanism permits the drum to revolve in one direction against the force of spring .9 when the chain (Z is pulled, and during retraction of the drum by the spring, the pawl, when released, is caused to remain disengaged from the ratchet by centrifugal force. An opening 1" is provided in the disk 41-, so that the looped end Z of the spring may be seen through the disk, to facilitate placing one of the spurs m in the looped end of the spring when the drum is being placed in the case and is being operatively connected to the spring. This pawl and ratchet mechanism is disposed in a chamber 6 formed within the drum, so that the cover may be disposed in close proximity in the front of the drum and undue thickness of the case will be avoided, and the backs of the disk n are flush with the front of the spring-chamber.

The invention thus provides an improved reel-holder, which may be snugly attached against the clothing of the user and which will be securely held against the clothin so that the operation of the pawl and ratchet mechanism will not be interfered with. The device also provides an improved and simple construction for a reelholder.

The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. The combination of a case, a drum mounted therein, a spring for operating said drum in one direction, holding-means for said drum, said case being recessed at its back, and a fastening device secured to said case and extending across the back thereof and having its attaching terminals disposed in said recessed portion.

2. The combination of a case, a drum mounted therein, a spring for operating the drum in one direction, pawl and ratchet mechanism for holding the drum, said case having a projecting back-portion around which a recess'is formed at the outer edge of the case, and a fastening-device extending across the projecting portion of the back and having a spring-loop extending into said recess and secured to said case.

3. The combination of a case, a drum mounted therein, said case having a back- 0 wardly extending portion of the case, pawl and ratchet mechanism for holding said drum, and a fastening pin on the back of said case outside of the projecting portion extending across said projecting portion and havin its attachin terminals dis oosed in said recess.
