To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROSE GroLENsnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Graters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rotary graters for vegetables and similar substances.
It has for its object to improve the construction of such instruments with respect particularly to the means for operating or supporting the grating or cutting member, and with respect to the means for supporting the vegetables or other articles in position to be acted on by the grater.
Various other improved details will be evident from the following description.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the gra-ter. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section.
Tn the drawings, 6 indicates a standard convenient-ly made of sheet metal pressed to proper shape as illustrated, and provided at the top with a dished or cupped part 7, standing vertically, and having a marginal forwardly projecting flange 8 which tapers off into the standard at its lower ends, as indicated at 9. Projecting from the flange 7, at diametrically opposite points in the same horizontal line, are ears 9a to which is hinged, by pins 10, a sheet metal holder 11, curved to semi-circular form and of such shape as to retain the vegetable or fruit in proper position to be grated. This holder has atits lower or inner edge a spring catch 12 which may be engaged in a slot 13 in the standard 6, below the grater. The holder may be swung toward or from the standard, and when sprung out to the position shown in dotted line in Fig. 1, the grated material will be dumped into a dish beneath.
The circular dished portion 7 at the top of the standard is provided at its center with a bearing sleeve 15 for the spindle 16 which has at the rear end a crank handle 17. The spindle is reduced in diameter where it passes through the sleeve, forming a shoulder 19 at the end of the sleeve. The inner or front end of the spindle is threaded to receive the hub 20 of a sheet metal spider, the
arms of which are fastened, as by rivets 16a, to the outer edge of a dished cutting or grating disk 22, which is shown as provided with teeth 23 forming a rough or grating surface. Other forms of teeth or cutting edges may be used. By means of the crank the spider and grating disk are rotated.
At its lower end the standard is provided with a foot 24 adapted to rest on a table, and a pair of lower clamping arms 25, arranged to engage under the edge of the table, and located on opposite sides of the foot 24:. These arms are flanged to give strength and also to support a cross rod 26 which passes through the flanges and supports a clamping wedge 27 which is located in the space between said arms and directly under the foot 24. This wedge has at its rear end a linger piece 28, and at its side edges has depending flanges 29 with inclined slots 30 therein, the rod 26 passing through said slots.
The machine is fastened to a table or the like by entering the edge of the same between the foot 24 and the arms 25, and then forcing in the wedge 27 which binds the edge of the table. The potato, fruit or other ma` terial to be grated is placed in the holder 11 and pressed against the grating disk which is rotated by means of the crank 17. The grated material is collected in the holder 11, which may then be emptied by disengaging the catch 12 and swinging the same outwardly on its pivots to allow the material to drop into the dish below.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An implement of the kind described, comprising a standard, a rot-ary grating member supported thereon, and a holder hinged at its opposite upper ends to the standard and extending under the grating member in position to hold the article to be grated against the face of said member and arranged to swing on its hinges outwardly from said position, to dump the grated ma` terial therefrom.
2. An implement of the kind described, comprising a standard having a circular dished part at the top thereof, a crank shaft mounted in a bearing at the center of said part and provided with a grating disk In testimony whereof, I do ailiX my sigiotatable therewith in said dished part, and nature in presence of two witnesses.
