F ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOUNTAIN-PEN.
season Sth @ZZ w'iom it may concern:
Be it known that l, RALPH F. VAN
.l/VINKLE, citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Erie, in the county of Erie and State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in FountqainPens, of wnich the following` is a specihcation.
This invention relates to fountain pens, and its main object is, to provide a pen of highly ornamental appearance, simulating a. pearl inlaid pen, capable et' being` manufactured at very small cost.
A further object of the invention is, to
. provide an ornamental holder for fountain pens in which the parts will be very irinly connected together and in such a manner as to present a smooth exterior surface.
The construction of the improvement will be Jfully described hereinafter, in connection with the ecompanying drawing` which formsa part of this specification, and its features oi novelty will be set forth and defined in the appended claim.
In the drawing z-,Figurc l is a view in perspective of a fountain pen holder embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the holder. Fig. is a central longitudinal section of a moditied construction of the holder. Fig. e is perspective view of one of the strips forniing the ornamental covering for the central portion ot the holder, and `Fig. is a similar View of one of the modilied strips shown in Fig. 3.
rlhe holder comprises a ltubular body portion l serving as the-ink reservoir of the pen, and prei'erablyimade ol thin sheet metal, which may or may not be screwthreaded for the attachment thereto of tubular end- caps 2 and 3 of hard rubber or other Suitable material. To the exterior surface of the metallic tube l between the end caps 2 and 3 is applied a covering of an ornamental character consisting ot' a series of longitudinal strips 4 of shell or so-called pearl of which pearl-handled knives and the like articles are constructed, ornamental metal or the like. One of these strips is shown in detail in Fig. 4 andit will be noted that each oit the strips is recessed at its ends to provide two shoulders 5 and 6 so that 'when the strips are assembled to en tirely cover that portion of the meta-l tube obed continu s annular shoulders 7 Speccation of Letters Patent. Application' led October 24, i916.
Patented June t3, 19M. Serial No. 588,916.
.are formed by the meeting-of the series of shoulders 5 and 6 on the several strips.
The strips are secured to the tube l by cement or any other durable adhesive material, with the longitudinal edges of the strips in close abutting contact, and preferabiy cemented together along said edges. After the strips are thus firmly attached to the tubular body et' the pen holder, the hard rubber caps 2 and 3 recessed at their inner ends to present annular shoulders 8 are titled over the ends ot' the tube l so that the inner ends of said caps will rest against the ends et' the strips. The caps 2 and 3 are interiorly recessed at their inner ends to form annular shoulders l() against which the ends of the tube l. abutwhen the caps are in place as shown in Fig. 2. rlhe end caps may be frietionally fitted upon the tube l' or threaded thereto` as may be desired.
The joining of the caps and the ends of the strips provides annular recesses 9 to receive bands 10a preferably oit sheet metal which overlap the inner reduced ends of the caps, and also the recessed ends of the strips, the outer surfaces oi the bands 10 strips and caps, Jthus avoiding projecting edges or surfaces the entire exterior of the holder being smooth and iinished., 'lhe bands l0 are cemented in place and constitute a firm reinfmfcenicnt .tor the end caps and contribute to the strength and durain Figs. 3 and 5 I have shown a n'ioditiedconstruction of the invention in which the strips d are each formed at each end with two shoulders 5a and t3 and the end caps 2 and 3 `with internal annular shoulders 8a which abut the ends of the shouldered strips, the inner ends ot the caps overlapping the ends ot' the strips and resting against the shoulder 5 thereof. The bands i0 overlap the inner ends of thecaps and abut the shoulders Ca of the strips.
if preferred an integral tube may be substituted for thev strips, the endsof the tube being formed with shoulders.
It will be apparent that by my improvement fountain pen holders of a highly ornamental appearance may be manufactured at a very small cest, and that the construction described and shown provides a very desirable holder.
Having fully ldescribed my' invention.
'what I claim and desire to secure by Letupon the ends of the strips and inclosing the ters Patent, is shoulders7 and end caps tted upon the pro- A holder for fountain pens comprising a jecting ends of tlie body member and abutmeta'llic tubular body member, a series of ting against the shoulders of the strips.
