Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, 1911.
Application filed November 12, 1910. Serial No. 592,071.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM JOHN MAND- LEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Shelburne, in the county of Dufferin, in the Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grinders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The invention relates to improvements in grinding machines, as described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
The invention consists essentially in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, whereby the tool support is movable longitudinally and laterally during grindin and the grinder suit-ably supported in relation thereto.
The object of the invention is, to devise a simple and easily operated form of grind ing machine, particularly adapted for the grinding of cutter bars of agricultural machines, and which may be marketed at very low cost.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the machine, showing one of the supports for carrying the cutter blade to be ground, partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail of a portion of the grinder, showing a slightly modified form of tool rest.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a rectangular frame having the legs 2 at each end thereof rigidly connected thereto and braced by the bars 8.
4 are a pair of standards rigidly secured to the inner sides of the side members of the frame 1 and extending vertically above and below the said side members.
5 and 6 are blocks adjustably mounted on the upper and lower ends of the standards 4, said blocks having longitudinal slots 7 therein through which the bolts 8 extend, said bolts being adapted to hold said slots rigidly in their adjusted positions.
9 is a grooved wheel having its axle 1O journaled in the blocks 5.
11 are cranks connected to the ends of the axle 10 and operatively connected to the treadles 12 by the connecting rods 13, said treadles being pivotally secured at their outer ends to the inner sides of the rear legs 2.
14 is the grinder wheel shaft journaled in the hearings in the blocks 6 having a grooved pulley 15 secured thereto over which the belt 16 extending around the wheel 9 extends.
17 is a seat secured at one end to the frame 1 for the operator to sit upon when working the treadles 12.
18 are a pair of uprights rigidly secured to the outer sides of the frame 1 a short distance to the rear of the standards 4, said uprights havin their upper ends formed with right angular notches 19.
20 are metal straps secured to the forward edges of the uprights 18 and extending over the top thereof and bent downwardly at right angles and secured to the rear sides and bent again outwardly from said uprights to an angular position and secured tothe frame to form braces for said uprights.
21 and 22 are rollers journaled on suitable pins extending across the rectangular ori fices 23 formed between the straps 20 and the notched upper ends of the said uprights 18.
24 is a bar extending through the orifices 23 and engaging the rollers 21 and 22 and adapted to be moved laterally of the machine.
25 are vertical members secured to the ends of the bar 24 and having their upper ends bent forwardly and formed eye shaped attheir extremities.
26 are hook members having eye shaped upper ends of the members 25 and depending therefrom, said hook members being adapted to support the cutter bar 27 so that the said cutter bar may be swung backwardly and forwardly and laterally to be brought into engagement with the grinder wheel 28.
29 is a short tool rest adapted to be inserted between the pairs of rollers 21 and 22 and secured from longitudinal movement by the block 30. The rest 29 is adapted to be used when an ordinary circular grinder wheel is used for grinding ordinary tools.
In the operation of this device, the operator sits upon the seat and operating the treadles 12 rotates the grinder wheel. The cutter bar to be ground supported upon the hook ends of the hooks 26 and the operator secured in the eye shaped ends slides the bar 24 laterally to bring the first pair of teeth of the bar into line with the grinder wheel. The hook members 26 swing freely in any direct-ion so that no accurate adjustment is necessary and as the vertical members 25 are the same length as also' are the hooks 26, movement in either direction will hold the ends of the cutter bar in the same relative position, thereby insuring uniformity in the work accomplished.
lVhat I claim as my invention is 1. In a grinder, the combination with a rigid frame, of a grinder wheel suitably supported from said frame, a pair of uprights extending rigidly from said frame and having lateral orifices therein, a bar extending across the machine and through said orifices and slidable therein, rigid uprights secured to the ends of said bar, and tool supporting members suspended from said uprights and swinging freely thereon and supporting the tool to be ground above said grinder wheel.
2. In a grinder, the combination with a rigid frame, of a grinder wheel suitably supported from said frame, a pair of uprights rigidly secured to the sides of said frame to the rear of said grinder wheel, metal straps secured to the front and rear sides of the said uprights and forming a forwardly projecting loop, rollers arranged between the sides of said metal straps and extending longitudinally above the machine, a rectangular shaped bar extending across the machine and between the pairs of rollers, vertically extending members projecting upwardly from the ends of said bar and having forwardly bent ends, and hook shaped members swinging from the extremities of said vertical members.
3. In a grinder, the combination with a rigid frame, of a pair of vertically arranged standards rigidly secured to the sides of said frame, bearing blocks adjustably secured to the ends of said standards, a grooved wheel rotatably supported in the lower bearing blocks, means for rotating said grooved wheel, a shaft rotatably supported in the upper bearing blocks, a grooved pulley fixedly secured to said shaft, a belt extending around said pulley and across the wheel, a grinder wheel secured to said shaft, a member extending across said frame and slidable in its supports, and tool supporting members supported from said bar and adapted to swing freely on their supports.
