To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS RICHARDS, of Renfrew, in the township of Horton, county of Renfrew, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Fastenings, 'of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to' improvements in rail fastenings and supports and the objects of my invention are to provide means for preventing the spreading or drawing closer together of the rails or the canting thereof and such means as will firmly and effectually hold the two opposite rails in their proper relative position and to further operate to prevent the tilting of the individual rail, and thus prevent many railway ac* cidents, lengthen the' life of the ties and reduce the labor of the section men.
My improved' fastening 'consists essentially of binding members provided with chair members which lock the rails securely on said binding members while novel means are provided for adjusting the position of said binding members relative to each other and for securely locking the same in their adjusted position all of which is herein more particularly described in the accompanying drawings and specification.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In said drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved fastening. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of one of the binding members employed in which the inside surface of the binding member is shown. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional View of my improved rail brace. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail on the line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 3-3, Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a block used in the device.
Referring to said drawings, A represents the rail fastening formed of suitable material such as iron or steel and consists of two adjacent binding members 10 and 11 provided at their outer extremities with chair members 12 which are shaped to t snugly against the outer surfaces of the rails and prevent the same from spreading outwardly, while in order to lock said chair members 12 securely on the binding members 10 and 11 tongues 13)a are provided integral with the chair members which lock in suitable dove-tail slots 14 provided in the binding members. If desired, tightening wedges might be inserted between the tongue and groove.
Any inward displacement of the rails is prevented by the provision of the projections 13 integral with the binding members 10 and 11, said projections being shaped to lit tightly against the inside base plates of the rails. The binding members 10 and 11 are secured together at their overlapping portions by means of bolts 15 and in order to adjust the position of the binding members relatively to each other, slots 16 are provided in the member 11 in which the bolts may slide.
It may be mentioned that the regulating block 22 and drop pin 21 may be made in different sizes so as to adapt the device to different sizes of rails.
To prevent any downward displacement between the binding members7 a longitudinally extending tongue 23 is provided on each member 1() and 11, which locks in a corresponding groove 24 similarly provided.
It will be readily seen that I have devised an extremely simple and effective device for accomplishing the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. A rail fastening for rail-road rails comprising adjacent binding members provided with slots, chair members adapted to lock against the outside surface of the rails provided with tongues adapted to lock in said slots, means for adjusting the position of the binding members to each other and means for locking the same in adjusted position.
2. A rail support for rail-road rails comprising adjacent binding members provided with projections adapted to lock against the inside surface of the rails and with slots, chair members adapted to lock against the outside surface of the rails provided with tongues adapted to lock in said slots, means for adjusting the position of the binding members relatively to each other and means for locking the same in adjusted position.
3. A rail support for rail-road rails comprising two adjacent binding members provided with slots, chair members adapted to lock against the outside surface of the rails, provided with tongues adapted to lock in said slots, one of said binding members provided with a slot, abolt located in the other binding member adapted to project through said slot and means for locking said bolt in the slot.
4. A rail support for rail-road rails comprising two adjacent binding members provided with projections adapted to lock against the inside surface of the rails and with slots, chair members adapted to lock against the outside surfaces of the rails provided with tongues adapted to lock in said slots, means for adjustinng the position of the binding members relative to each other, means for securing said members in adjusted position, one of said members being provided with a downwardly tapered groove, the other with a projection adapted to protrude into said groove and divide the same into tapered slots and a regulating block and pin adapted to tit said tapered slots.
5. A rail fastening for rail-road rails comprising two adjacent binding members provided with projections adapted to lock against the inside surface of the rails and with slots, chair members adapted to lock against the outer surface of the rails provided with tongues adapted to lock in said slots, means for adjusting the position of said binding members, relative to each other, means for locking the same in adjusted position, one of said binding members being pro' vided with a horizontally extending tongue and the other binding member with a groove adapted to receive said tongue.
6. A rail fastening comprising adjacent binding members one of which has a groove and the other a projection tting therein and of less width than the same, said groove having a transverse groove formed across the bottom thereof, a regulating block eX- tending between one side of the projection and the side of the first mentioned groove and having a tongue to fit the transverse groove and a drop pin extending between the opposite side of the projection and the side of the groove.
