Description

E. JONES. BRAKE BLOCK AND HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED 0GT.'17,1910.

Hal;
WI TNESSESI EDWIN JONES, OF LLANERGH-Y-MOR, HOLYWELL, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN ARTHUR STUART, OF PRESIATYN, NORTH WALES, ENGLAND.
BRAKE-BLOCK AND HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ebwnv JONES, a subject of the King of England, residing at Llanerch-y-mor, Holywell, North Vales, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake-Blocks and Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brake blocks or shoes and holders for railway and tramway vehicles.
According to this invention, the back of a brake block or shoe is provided with a longitudinal projection or lug, the upper and lower ends of which are similarly inclined or undercut; and the holder for the block is provided with a longitudinal slot, the lower end of which is inclined, to receive the lower inclined or undercut end of the projection or lug on the back of the block. At the upper end of said longitudinal slot in the holder, a transverse slot is provided through it, and, when the block and holder are assembled, a key or cotter is passed through said transverse slot in the holder, and, lying on the inclined or undercut end of the projection or lug of the block, prevents displacement of the block from the holder. If necessary, a pin is passed through the end of said key or cotter to prevent it from backing-off. The block may be placed in position within the holder, from either side, or from the top. Blocks as described are reversible, and are also interchangeable with their holders.
A drawing illustrating this invention is annexed hereto, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a block and holder assembled. Fig. 2 is a back view. Fig. 3 is a view of the front of the holder. Fig. 4 is a back view of the block. Figs. 5 and 6 are, respectively, side and back elevations of a block with modified form of holder. Fig. 7 illustrates a portion of a block and holder with the key or cotter removed.
The back of the block or shoe (1 is provided with a longitudinal lug Z), the ends of which are inclined or undercut at c, and the block holder at is provided with a longitudinal slot cl, the lower end 6 of which is inclined to receive the lower inclined or undercut end 0 of lug b. At the upper end of said longitudinal slot d, a transverse slot f is provided through the holder. WVhen Specification of Letters Patent.

block a is fitted to the holder, the uppermost end of the lug or projection I) preferably projects beyond the lower face 9 of the transverse slot f, as shown at 72, Fig. 7 to permit of the necessary draw, and to prevent rattling. 2' represents a key or cotter passed through said transverse slot f in the holder, and lying upon the inclined or underout upper end of lug Z), thus preventing displacement of the block from the holder. Preferably, said end of lug b is parallel with the top of transverse slot f as shown in the drawing, in order that a key or cotter with parallel upper and lower faces may be used. Keys or cottcrs of other suitable cross section may, however, be employed. is a locking pin for said key or cotter i.
The sides of the block holder a are recessed at is to receive the head 2' of the key or cotter i.
In some cases, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, there may be provided on the holder a guide piece Z, which, by fitting over a wagon wheel, maintains the brake, as a whole, in position.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination, a brake block the back whereof is provided with a longitudinal projection having similarly inclined ends; a holder provided with a longitudinal slot the lower end of which is inclined-and a transverse slot; and a key adapted, when passed through said transverse slot, to prevent displacement of said block from said holder.
2. In combination, a brake block-holder provided with a longitudinal slot-the lower end of which is inclinedand a transverse slot; a brake block the back whereof is provided with a longitudinal projection having similarly inclined ends, the upper end of said projection, when the holder and block are assembled together, being adapted to project beyond the lower face of said transverse slot; and a key adapted, when passed through said transverse slot, to prevent displacement of said block from said holder.
3. In combination, a brake block the back whereof is provided with a longitudinal proj ection having similarly inclined ends; a holder provided with a longitudinal slotthe lower end of which is inclined-, a transverse slot, and a side recess; and a key adapted, when passed through said transverse slot,
to prevent displacement of said block from said holder.
l. In combination, a brake block-holder provided with a longitudinal slot-the lower end of which is inclined, a transverse slot, and a side recess; a brake block the back whereof is provided with a longitudinal projection having similarly inclined ends, the upper end of said projection, when said holder and block are assembled together, being adapted to project beyond the lower face of said transverse slot; and a key adapted, when passed through said transverse slot, to prevent displacement of said block from said holder.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN JONES.
