To all whom it may concern: A

Be it known that I, LORENZO D. STOUT, a cltizen of the United States of America, residing at Moorestown, in the county of Missaukee and State of Michigan, have invented new' and useful Improvements in Bean- Pullers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to bean pullers, and it has for its object to produce a simple and effective device for harvesting beans by pulling the same from the vines.

A further object of the invention is to produce an implement of the class described which may be readily manufactured and assembled for use and which may be furnished at a small expense.

With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.

In the drawing,-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken transversely through the handle and looking in the direction of the blade. Fig. 1 is an end elevation showing the opposite side of the blade. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 in Fig. 4.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.

The blade 1 of the improved device may be formed of sheet steel, the same belng punched or cut to form at the lower edge of said blade a plurality of teeth 2 of suitable dimensions, said teeth being slightly spaced apart at their inner ends, as shown at 3. This blade is reinforced upon its outer side by means of a strap or plate 5 extending the entire width of the blade and having a I longitudinal groove beveled lower edge 6 which coincides with the inner or butt end of the teeth. This reinforcing plate may be formed of cast steel or other suitable material, and it is provided near the middle and at suitable distances from the ends with perforations 7, 8 coinciding with similar perforations 9, 10 inthe blade 1. The handle 11 which may be made of wood and of any suitable dimensions is provided in its underside with a 12.

13 represents a yoke or bail of steel wire or other suitable material, the ends of the arms of which are looped around the blade 1 and the reinforcing plate 5, the terminal ends being extended through the apertures 8 and 10 of the reinforcing member and the blade, respectively. A rod or wire arm 14, which is accommodated in the groove 12 of the handle, has an upturned end 15 extending through an aperture 16 of the handle and bent over the middle portion of the yoke 13 which is thereby firmly secured upon the handle. The outer end of the arm 1% is looped over the upper edges of the blade 1 and the plate 5 and extended through the apertures 7, 9, thus connecting said plate and blade together and with the handle. A ring or ferrule 17 encircles the handle near the end thereof so as to support the arm 14 in the groove 12.

hen thus constructed and assembled, the improved tool is very inexpensive and durable, and in the event of breakage of any part, it may be readily repaired.

To use the improved tool the hill of beans is engaged by the teeth, and the beans are detached by an upward pull upon the handle, after which by a quick backward motion the beans may be unloaded upon the ground or into a receptacle provided for the purpose.
