Description
i @initrd gieten WILLIAM MURRAY, 0F ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA.
Letters Patent No. 99,463, dated February 11870.
` CORN-HARVESTER.
The'Sche'dule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same. l i
To all whom it may concern:
`Be it known that I, W1LLIAM"MURRAY,of Alexandria, in the county of Alexandria, and State of Vir ginia, have invented a new and'valuable Improvementin Corn-Stalk Gut-ter; and I do hereby declare that' the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, aud'to the lettersandgures of refer'ence marked thereon. i Figure l, of the drawings, is a-top'view.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view.
My invention has relation to means for cutting cornstalks; and 1tconsists mainl yin the constructionand nouel'aar# rangement ot' devices intended to 'servev an eicient purpose in cutting standing hills of corn-stalks, and passing them in suitable bundles to the ground ready for binding. i
To this end I construct a carriage in two sections, to be moved upon three Wheels, which sections, for descriptiye purposes, I have marked respectively A and B on the drawings.
vSection A has two large wheels a, a, firmly attached to theaxle, and rotating therewith.
The frame G rests upon the axle a little in the rearl ofthe longitudinal centre, and its front end is in part supported by the caster I). l
I attach a pinion, c, to the axle, which` gears with the pinion f on the longitudinal shaft next mentioned.
F is a shaft resting and revolving on bearings inthe frame O. The pinion f is attached to its rear end, and thecrank-wheel g toits front, in the manner shown on fig. 1.
Ihe letter h represents the drivers seat, and '11,- the foot-rest, both arranged on section A. ot'frame C is constructed, so as to form the hounds of the carriage in which the ueap is arranged.
I attach a plate, H, under the hounds, as shown, which serves as an aid in supportingthe front end of the frame, by bringing a portion ofthe weight thereof upon the ueap.` Y
The section B is attached to section A, by means of, the cross-beams G and H, in the manner shown on iig. 1. It consists mainly of the platform K, elevated sides L, axle M, with iixed wheeLN, together with the cutting and unloading-apparatus nekt described.
.0 represents the cutting-bar connected with the crank g, bythe rod n, and by means of which rod and crank, it is forced to vibrate back and forth automat# '.ically. 1
Ihe front end The knives upon this-bar are marked ron the draw-V ings. They are formed with enlarged diamond-shaped points, and curved cutting-edges, as shown.
The letters s represent grooved o1' slotted fingers, in which the knives vibrate., and against the curved sides of which nthe corn-stalks are` cnt.
P represents my gathering-reel. It consists of a vertical-rotating standard, with curved arms, as shown.
The lettera represents a drum attached to the lower end of this reel.
' I form a similar drum -upon the axle M, and aband or belt, t', is. passed overboth to operate said reel.
'At the rear end of the platform K, I aix the rolling-barm, to which I attach the arms p and w. Y is a rod, extending from ar-m w to the rake a', to which it is hinged. A rod, c', extends from arm 11 .to the lever R, which lever is pivoted to the side bf section B in the manner shown. f-
'Io operate my device, the machine is drawn forward, the team travelling tothe left of a standing row of corn, and bringing the front end of section B im- `mediately in the rear thereot'.
'Lhe movement of the wheels c a, and their connec-` tions, causes the cutting-bar to vibrate to the right and left, and cut the stalks. Thev wheel of section B and its connections rotate the reel, and thereby press .the stalks rmly against the fingers for cutting, and when cut, carries the stalks rearward upon the platforml K. When a quantity of stalks, sniiicient for a bundle, has thus been cut and conveyed to the platform, the. operator draws the top ot' leverR rearward, and thereby forces such bundle from the platform to the ground.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Iate'nt, is f 4 1. The roller m, arms p and w, rods Y and c', rake a', and lever R, when combined with the platform K, and arranged to operate as speciiied.
2. The arrangement herein shown; oi' the shaft F, pinions e and f, crank y, rod n, cutting-bar 0, knives r,and reel I, with its curved arms as described, when the same are combined with the platform K, and dis-.
charging-apparatus speciied.
In testimony that'I claim the above, I have here- ,unto subscribed my name, in the presence ot' two witmesses. Y his` `WILLIAM -l- MURRAY. mark. 'Witnesses 'l E. W'. ANDERSON, D. D. Km.
