Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J1me 1911.
Application filed larch), 4811; Serial No. 615,639.
To all whom. 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W.0B uzr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing;l at'MountfVernon, in the county of Westc ester and State of New York, have invented certain new and usef l- Improvements in Ties and -Rail-Fasteners, 'of which the following is '-a specification, reference being had'therein to the accompanyingdrawin g. This, invention: relates to ties and rail fasteners, and the objectsof the invention are to providea tie that can be made of metal or concrete and placed upon a roadbed, firmly supporting the rails of a track', and to furnish the tie. with a fastener that will positivelyretain rails thereon. and prevent lateral and vertical displacement of said rails. 1 Further. objects of the invention are to provide a rail fastener that can be easily and quickly .'nsta.lled without the use of skilled labor; and to provide a fastener that is simple in construction, 'durable and inex: pensive tomanufacture;
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction to be 1 hereinafter specifically described andthen 'claiined, and reference will now be had to the drawing' wherein there is illustrated a'preferred embodiment of .the invention, but it is to be understoodthzi-t the structural ceptible to such changes .as fall within. the. scope of theappended claim. Y
In the drawing z-Figure 1 is a side e e vation of a portion of a tie in accordance with this invention. Fig.- 2 is a plan of the same. "Fig; 3fis a perspective view ofth detached outer fastener... Fig. is a plain inner fas'ten'er and Fig. 5 is aside elevation of the tie 'isidentical, saryto descr be one end of thetiej;
' ends thereof terminat g.
of a portion of the tie I partly broken away and part1 in sections..."
The re .erence numeral 1 denotes an long tie structure made of metal or con'crete and as the detailed construction at each end I- deem it only neces The tie adj merit to the end thereof is provided-with four vertical openings 2 havm'githe lower recessesfiadapt ed to receive the. heads 4;..of vertical bolts 5. These bolts are employed. in, c nnection with nuts 6 for plats Tuponthetie 1m a tie structure 15.; d patehaving opemngsf81to' i 15, for a purpose that w The slot '14 is in communication with and said plate is through the of oflsetto extend over 23 of the rail-12. The outer edge of -t e I fastener 21 has 'a depending to engage in the slot 13.

.ner edge of the plate'7 is cut or sheared, as at 9 to provide a central ton ue 10,which is bent upwardly and inward y to constitute an inner fastener forengaging the inner base flanges 11 of a rail 12. a The outer end of the plate 7 is provided with two longitudinal slots 13'and14, the latter having the longitudinal walls intermediatethe ends provided with oppositely disposed recesses l presently appear.
a pocket 16 inthe top of-the tie structure 1, provided with a depending pin 17 extending into said pocket.
V The reference having awinged head 19 adapted to pass s 0t 14: into thepocket '16 and numeral 18 denotes'a bolt engage" the pin 17, which prevents thebolt 18 from rotating in one'direction, when the nut 20 is screwed upon the upperend of the bolt. The oppositely disposed recesses 15' rovide clearance for the bolt 18. The
- bolt 18'and the nut 20are adapted to retain an outer fastener 21 upon. the tieeglate, said outer fastener having the inner ge therethe outer base flan 'e lug 24 adapted From the -foregoing it will be-observedrts-of the fastener can be-easily assembled to I positively hold. arail in e agement with 7, and that sa dtie plate is anchored upon the tie structure.
