It is well understood that a speed of from 3500 to 4500 stitches per minute is demanded of sewing machines operated by mechanical power, and at this speed spring-actuatcd elements, such as thread controller take-up springs, cannot be relied upon to maintain movements strictly synchronous with those of the positivelyactuated coacting elements; and under certain conditions of speed and stitch formation, the needle thread is a t to become looped around the free ends 0 the mechanical elements comprising the needle thread tension and controller mechanism.
The object of the present invention is to improve the general construction of thread controlling devices and provide means for properly controlling the maximum length of slack thread when operating upon the minimum thickness of a fabric at high speed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the head or front end portion of a sewing machine bracket arm equipped with the inven' tion. Fig. 2 is a perspective .of the thread tension stud upon which the thread controller elements are mounted. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the thread controller take-up spring. Figg. is a perspective of the thread controller thread guard. Fig. 5 is a perspective of the oppositely arranged thread tension disks.

1 represents the head or free end portion of the sewing machine bracket arm in which are mounted the needle-bar 2 and presserbar 3.
4 represents a thread tension stud, a portion 5 of which is reduced in diameter and mounted in a suitable opening formed in the boss 6, a suitable set screw (not shown) serving to secure said stud in the ordinary manner.
7 represents a thread controller take-up spring mounted upon the stud 4 with its end 8 located in the slot 9 of said stud. 10 a thread tension disk arranged to contact with the shoulder 11 of the stud 1, and 12 a thread tension disk which contacts with the disk 10. Outside of the disk 12 is mounted the thread controller thread guard 13 which is acted upon by the thread tension spring 14, the outer end of which latter is confined by the adjusting nut 15 threaded upon thestud 4-. The spring 7 is mounted upon the stud 4. with its barrel portion toward the boss 6 and its eye portion 16 about said stud and between the disk 12 and thread guard 13. The straight portion 17 of the spring 7 passes through an opening 18 formed in the guard 13, the shoulder 19 of the latter acting to limit the movements of said spring in a direction to control the slack of the thread 21. The disk 12 is provided with a thread notch or leader 22 through which the thread passes inits travel from between the thread tension disks 10 and 12 to the thread eye 20 of said controller take-up spring. To hold the guard 13 and disks 10 and 12 from axial movement upon the stud 1, said guard is provided with a pin 23 which passes through notches 24.- and 25, formed in the disks 10 and 12, respectively, and enters a. suitable opening (not shown) formed in the boss 6. Formed in the peripheral rim of the guard 13 is a slot 26 through which .the thread passes in its travel from the thread check 27 to the take-up 28, the degree of tension given said thread as it passes between the disks 10 and 12 being controlled by the adjustment of the nut 15. To produce the desired degree of resiliency of the thread controller spring 7, the stud 4 is axially adjusted in its seat in the boss 6 in a manner common to earlier forms of thread controlling devices.
The guard 13. in, addition to protect-in the needle thread from being interfere with by certain of the elements comprising the thread tension and thread controlling mechanism, rovides i-m )roved means for guiding the t read in an from between the tension disks and for holding the thread eye 20 in proper alinement with said disks, and permits said thread eye to be located farther from the axis ot the stud 4:, thus increasing its effective action or a given number of degrees of movement and providing a thread controller sprin stop element out of range of possible inter 'erence with the slack of the needle thread.
Claims:
1. In a thread controller for sewing machines, a thread tension stud provided with thread tension disks, a thread controller thread uard provided with a pin for holding sai guard and said tension disks against axial movement and having a flange provided with an opening for the passage of the needle thread, and a thread controller take up spring carried by said stud.
2. In a thread controller for sewing niachines, a thread tension stud provided with thread tension disks secured against rotation and between which the needle thread passes when being consumed by the stitching operation, a thread controller thread guard mounted on said stud and havin a ange provided with a thread slot, an a thread controller take-u spring mounted upon said stud and acting to cont-r01 the slack of the needle thread in its travel from between said tension disks to'the action of the. needle thread take-u 3. In a thread controller for sewing machines, a thread-tension stud provided with ments being (provided at its periphery with a thread lea er, a thread controller thread guard having a flange provided with a thread slot, and a thread controller take-up spring carried by said stud.
5.. In a thread controller for sewing inachines, a thread tension stud provided with thread tension elements for applying tension to the needle thread, a thread controller thread guard having a flange provided with a thread slot, and a thread controller takeup spring carried by said stud, said guard being provided with a stop for limiting the movements of said thread controller take-up spring in a direction for controlling the slack of the needle thread.
