Letters Patent No. 99,430, dated February 1, 1870.

`tion, in which drawing-- Figure 1 is a side view of the invention.
Figure 2 is au elevation of the apparatus, which shows a side view of the pulleys, to which motion is communicated by the motor.

This invention relates to a mechanical motor, in which the power is obtained from the tension put upon a spring; and p It consists in a peculiar construction and arrangement of pants, whereby simplicity and economy of construction are obtained in this class of motors.
The letterA designates a frame,`by which the apparat-us is supported, and in which the several shafts have their bearings.
To the upper part of the frame, ou its under side, I secu-re a stout spring, B, of the description sometimes called a Cspring, composed of any desired number of leaves, a b c d, according to the power required, the inner` leaves being successively shortened in length, and all being secured to the frame at their centre, by a'bolt, G.
The extremities of thespring B are drawn together `by cords D D, which are fastened at one end to said extremities, while their other ends are attached to a winding-pulley, E, placed within the spring B, on a Ashaft, F, which is turned by means of a crank G.
'The pulley E can be grooved, a'ud can be conical, or of the kind known as a fusee; but l do not confine myself` to any mode of making said pulley.
As the shaft Fis turned, the cords D D are wound up on tbe pulley, and the ends of the spring B are drawn toward each other, so as to putthe desired teusion or compression on the spring.
Upon the shaft F I place the first wheel H of a train .of gear-wheels, by which I cause the resistance or power of the spring to be communicated to the pul- I le 1s.
3The wheel H is loose on th.e shaft F, and is connected to said shaft by a springpaw1 and ratchet-wheel, in the usual manuel', which allows the spring to be compressed without motion being given to said wheel.
The otherwheels in the train, marked I J, are constructed and combined in the mode` common in watch and clock movements, and the last wheel in the train,
the wheel J, engages a worm, K, on the shaft L, onv
which is ixed a pulley, M, which will be driven at a speed commensurate to the tension of the spring, and the work to be performed by said pulley. The power thus obtained is distributed to other shafts, by means of bands and pulleys, as illustrated by the band and pulley N O, shown in ig; 2. I strengthen the spring B, and give it additional stiffness andelasticity, by means of a counter or supplemental spring 1?,.which I arrange below it, so as to form a counterpart thereto, the ends of the supplemental spring being connected to the ends of spring B by means of the cord's D D.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by `Let ters Patent, is-
The C-sp'rng B, the cords D D, and winding-pulley F, combined, arranged and operating substantially as described, through a train of gear-wheels, with a wormwheel, K, on the driven shaft L.
This specificatiou'signed by me, this 7th day of December, 1869.
RICHARD GRIMM. lVitnesses:
W, HAUFF, E. F KASTENHUBER.
