To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES MANSHEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ticket- Printing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a portable device for printing tickets and is particularly adapted for use by conductors to register upon transfer tickets the destination and the time of day, and the date of issue.
In addition to the general purpose already indicated the objects of my invention are convenience and facility of use, security against fraudulent manipulation, compactness, accurateness, and simplicity.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter pointed out in connection with the following description.
My invention consists in such novel parts, and combinations and arrangement of parts as are embraced by and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, Figures 1 and 2 are front and plan elevations respectively of my novel device, Fig. 3, a section on line a a of Fig. 2, with parts omitted, Fig. 4, a section on line b b of Fig. 3, Fig. 5, an end elevation of my device, Figs. 6, 7, and 8, sections of the same on lines 0 0, (Z d, and e 6, respectively of Fig. 3, Fig. 9, an enlarged view of certain parts on section line 7 f of Fig. 2, and Fig. 10, a plan of a ticket.

My invention in its present and preferred embodiment comprises an inner casing box, or housing of oblong rectangular contour consisting of top and bottom walls 3, 4, end walls 5, 6, integral with the top and bottom walls, and a back wall or plate 7. The plate 7 may be removably fastened in any desired manner to the other walls but in the present instance there is a depending lug 8 upon one margin of its inner face provided with a pin 9 adapted to register in an opening 11 in the top wall, while upon the other margin of the inner face is a lock 12 whose bolt 13 is adapted to enter a slot 14 in the bottom wall 4. The lock is operated through a key hole in the plate 7 as at 15.
The front of the casing is open except that the wall thereof extends inwardly from each end only a short distance. In the present instance this wall comprises at each end a vertical plate 18 flush with the front edges of the walls 3, 4, 5, and 6, with a right angularly bent portion 19 resting against the adjacent casing wall and secured to the latter by a screw 20 or otherwise. Integral with each bent portion 19 is a guide flange 21 extending inwardly from the casing wall. Near the ends of each plate 18 are openings 22, and in alinement therewith in the guide plates or flanges 21 are openings 23 through which sets of openings loosely pass guide rods 25 fixed at their upper ends 26 in any suitable manner to a platen 27, and provided at their inner ends with heads or nuts 29 which support the ends of helical springs 30 which surround the rods and whose upper ends press against the guides 21. Upon each end of the platen are legs 32 sliding through openings 33 in the plates 18.
For the purpose of reciprocating the platen toward and away from the remainder of the casing is the following mechanism. Rotatably mounted in the end wall 5 of the casing is a shaft 35, provided upon its outer end with a handle 36 and having fixed to its inner end a wheel 37 provided with a plurality, in this case three segmental teeth 38, the same constituting a cam. Fixed to the shaft 35 exterior of the wall 5 is a gear 39 provided with lateral projections 40 upon its outer face, three in number, and meshing with a gear 41 upon the end of a shaft 42 mounted in lugs 43 upon the bottom wall 4 of the casing. Upon the other end of the shaft 42 adjacent the exterior face of the wall 6 is a gear 44 meshing with a gear 45 upon a shaft 46 ournaled in the wall 6 and having fixed upon its inner end a wheel 47 with three segmental teeth, 48, constituting a second cam. By virtue of the springs 30 the legs 32 of the platen are pressed into continuous contact with the two cams, and the rotation of the shaft 35 in conjunction with the springs reciprocates the platen 27 toward and away from the remainder of the casing.
When during the rotation of the shafts 35 and 46 in unison the legs 32 ride outwardly over the curved surfaces of their respective 1 teeth, it is desirable to provide against any accidental reversal of rotation of the shafts 35 and 46 whereby the platen would prematurely act. A convenient device for attaining this result is the following. As shown in Fig. 6 a block 50 is fixed to the wall 5 above and partially surrounding the gear 39. A lever 51 comprising a vertical arm 52 and a horizontal arm 53 is pivoted on a pin 54 at one end of the block. At the other end of the block there is pivoted on a pin 55, a lever 56, comprising a vertical arm 57 and horizontal arm 58. Connecting the vertical arms of the levers is a link 59. Intermediate the link and the adjacent face of the block is a spiral spring 60 connected at one end to a pin 61 in the link and connected at its other end to a pin 62 in said block. The influence of this spring normally inclines the arm 53 downwardly into the path of the projections 40, and the arm 58 upwardly out of the path of the latter. A projection 40 moving in the direction of the arrow elevates arm 53 in passing the same, passes the end of said arm and momentarily strikes the then depending end of the arm 58 which forms a momentary stop, whereupon the levers under the influence of the spring 60 assume the positions shown in Fig. 6, and any reverse movement of the project-ion is prevented because of the contact of the end of the arm 53. The projections 40 are located relatively midway the curved faces of their corresponding cam teeth 38 and 48.
Rotatably mounted in the top and bottom walls 3 and 4 of the casing is the shaft 64 extending at one end beyond the wall 3 and provided upon that end with a milled head or handle 65. Fixed to this shaft is a type roll 67 provided upon its periphery with longitudinal rows of type 68 indicating streets. Also fixed to the shaft or roll is a wheel 70 provided with V shaped cavities 71 adapted to receive the V shaped end 72 of a pawl or spring arm 73 fixed to a pin 74 in wall 3. Mounted in the walls 3 and 4 adjacent the described roll is a second similar roll shaft 76 having a handle 77, carrying a roll 78, type 79, and a wheel 80 with cavities 81. Cooperating with the latter wheel is a spring arm 83 with a bent end 84 fixed to a pin or rod 85 in said wall 3. Fixed to the handles respectively are laterally projecting pointers 87 and 88 adapted to move around dials 89 and 90 marked on the wall 3. These characters marked on these correspond in each case with the type 68 and 79 of the respective rolls. In the walls 3 and 4 of the casing is also mounted a roll shaft 92 extending beyond the wall 3 and provided with a milled head 93 upon its projecting extremity. Loose upon the shaft 92 is a sleeve 94 having a milled outer end portion or head 95 exposed outside the wall 3 but below the head 93. Integral with the sleeve or attached thereto within the casing is a disk or hub 96 provided with diametrically opposite peripheral cavities 97. Integral with or fixed to the notched portion 96 of the sleeve is a roll 98 provided with peripheral type 99 and 100 at diametrically opposite points upon its periphery consisting respectively of the letters A M and P M.
A type roll 101 is fixed on shaft 92 provided with peripheral rows of type 102 arranged transversely of its periphery indi cating minutes. Integral with or fixed to this roll is a hub 103 provided with notches 104. Upon the bottom of the shaft 92 is a sleeve consisting of roll portion 106 with an annularly arranged series of type 107 indicating the hours. An adjacent portion 108 of the sleeve is provided with peripheral notches 109, and upon the sleeve end are gear teeth 110 meshing with the teeth 111 of a gear 112 fixed to a shaft 114 mounted in the walls 3 and 4 parallel with the shaft 92 and having a milled head 115 extending above the wall 3. The roll 106 is operated through the rod 114 and the gear 112.
Fixed in the walls of the casing parallel with and adjacent the described rolls is a bar 117 on which are fixed spring fingers or pawls 118. 119 and 120 engaging the teeth of the sleeves of hubs 96, 103, and 108 re spectively. Fixed to the handles 93, 95, and 115 are pointers 122, 123, and 124 respectively. Pointer 124 is associated with a dial 125 marked upon the casing and indicating the hours, pointer 122 is associated with a dial 126 indicating the minutes, and pointer 123 is associated with diametrically oppositely disposed index characters indicating morning and afternoon.
A shaft 128 is fixed in the walls 3 and 4 having loose thereon a roll 129 provided with peripheral type arranged in transverse rows 130 indicating years. Integral with this roll is a toothed hub 131, adjacent which are two rolls 133, 134, loose on the shaft and each provided with annularly arranged numeral type and 136. Upon the rolls 133 and 134 are toothed hubs 137 and 138 respectively. Loose on the same shaft is a third roll 139 with. peripheral rows 140 of type indicating months. This roll has a toothed hub 143. Upon the bar 117 are fixed four spring fingers or pawls e11- gaging the several toothed hubs. These pawls as well as all the other pawls already herein described press upon the toothed hubs of the corresponding rolls in such a manner as to retain said rolls against accidental rotation after adjustment. Type wheels on the shaft 128 are designed to be turned manually in any suitable way.
Mounted at the ends of the casing in the walls 3 and 4 are rotatable shafts 147 with their ends projecting beyond the casing. One projecting end of each shaft constitutes a head 148 and is provided with a transverse slot 149; while upon the opposite projecting shaft end in each case is a collar or nut 150, intermediate which and the casing is a spiral spring 152 which serves to press the head 148 into engagement with the casing wall. Upon the shafts 147 are rolled the ends of an inking ribbon 154 which passes over two guide rods 155 fixed in the walls 3 and 4 and located at the front margins of the same, one at each end. The type upon all the described type rolls are in contact with the back of the ribbon.
A ticket rest or guide is provided consisting of a thin strip or plate 157 fixed to the walls 3 and 4 by a screw 158 or otherwise and overlapping the ribbon. The platen 27 is preferably provided upon its under face with transversely disposed elevations 160, 161, 162 and 163 to cotiperate with the type on the several rolls. Over the ticket guide 157 the platen 27 is Provided with a marginal cavity 165.
Upon the top wall 3 near each end are fixed eyes 167 adapted to receive the ends of a suspensionstrap to be passed around the operators neck.
It is advantageous to house the exposed mechanism exterior of the casing. This may be done by any desired means. In the present instance the housing consists of a sheathing of thin metal comprising a rounded base 169 inclosing the bottoms of the gears 41 and 44' and upwardly extending sides 170 and 171 connected to the end walls of the casing by screws 172 and 173 respectively. The wall 171 extends only partially along the side of the casing and is supplemented by a second flanged plate portion 17 5. The adjacent margins of the portions 171 and 175 have cavities 176 to permit passage therethrough of the shaft 35.
What I claim is 1. In a ticket printing machine, the combination of a casing having its front wall provided with an opening, printing means disposed within said casing opposite said opening, a platen movable toward and from said opening and substantially closing the same for cotiperation with said printing means, said platen having an opening, and a ticket rest extending across said opening, means for moving the platen, and means for guiding the platen and giving it a rectilinear movement.
2. In a ticket printing machine, the combination of a casing having its front wall provided with an opening, printing means disposed within said casing opposite said. opening, an exteriorly located platen movable toward said opening and substantially closing the same for cotiperation with said printing means, said platen having an opening, and a ticket rest extending across said opening, and means for operating said platen, said platen forming one wall of the casing.
3. In a ticket printing machine, the combination of a casing having its front wall provided with an opening, printing means disposed within said casing opposite said opening, a platen movable to substantially close the said opening for coperation with said printing means, said platen having an opening, and a ticket rest extending across said opening, means for normally drawing said platen toward said printing means, means for forcing said platen away from said printing means, and means for guiding said platen in a rectilinear path during its to and fro movements.
4. In a ticket printing machine, in combination, a casing having its front wall practically open, printing means, a platen constructed to practically close the opening in the front of the casing and movable toward and from said printing means for coiiperation therewith and provided at each end with a leg, said platen having an opening and a ticket rest extending across said opening, means associated with said platen for moving the same in one direction, and means engaging said legs for moving said platen in the opposite direction.
5. In a ticket printing machine, the combination of a casing having its front wall open, printing means, a platen mounted opposite said front wall to substantially close the opening therein and movable toward and from said printing means for cotiperation therewith said platen having an opening, and a ticket rest extending across said opening, an operating member, and connections between said platen and said member for imparting a reciprocatory movement to the former during the actuation of the latter.
6. In a ticket printing machine, the combination of a casing having its front wall open, printing means, a platen mounted opposite said front wall to substantially close the opening therein and movable toward and from said printing means for cooperation therewith, said platen having an opening, and a ticket rest extending across said opening, a rotatable operating member, and connections between said platen and said member for imparting a reciprocatory movement to the former during the rotation of the latter.
7. In a ticket printing machine, the combination of a casing having its front provided with an opening, printing means located within said casing opposite said opening, a platen located without said casing and movable toward and from said opening to substantially close the latter for cooperation with said printing means, said platen having an opening, a ticket rest extending across said opening, an operating member, and connections between said platen and said member for imparting a reciprocatory rectilinear movement to the former during the actuation of the latter.
8. In a ticket printing machine, in combination, a casing having its front wall open,
printing means, a movable platen cooperating therewith and dlsposed vertically to close the opening in said wall, a drive shaft, a driven shaft in line with the drive shaft, connections between said shafts for causing the same to rotate in unison, and a pair of members carried by said shafts and arranged to engage said platen for operating the latter, said platen having an opening therein, and a ticket rest extending across said opening.
9. In a ticket printing machine, in comblnation, a casing having its front wall open, printing means, a movable platen cooperating therewith and disposed vertically to close the opening in said wall, a drive shaft, a driven shaft in line with the drive shaft, connections between said shafts for causing the same to rotate in unison, means for normally forcing said platen in one direction, and a pair of members carried by said shafts and arranged to engage said platen for periodically forcing the latter in the opposite direction when said shafts are in motion, said platen having an opening therein, and aticket rest extending across said opening.
10. In a ticket printing machine, in combination, a casing having its front wall open, printing means, a movable platen cooperating therewith and disposed vertically to close the opening in said wall, a drive shaft, a driven shaft in line with the drive shaft, connections between said shafts for causing the same to rotate in unison, means for normally forcing said platen in one direction, and a pair of toothed cams carried by said shafts and arranged to engage said platen for periodically forcing the latter in the opposite direction when said shafts are in motion, said platen having an opening therein, and a ticket rest extending across said opening.
11. In a ticket printing machine, in combination, a casing having its front wall open, printing means, a movable platen cooperating therewith and disposed vertically to close the opening in said wall, a drive shaft,
a driven shaft in line with the drive shaft,
connections between said shafts for causing the same to rotate in unison, connections between said shafts and said platen for operating the latter during the rotation of the former, and means for precluding backward rotation of said shafts, said platen having an opening therein, and a ticket rest extending across said opening.
12. In a ticket printing machine, in combination, a casing having its front wall open, printing means, a movable platen cooperating therewith and dis-posed vertically to close the opening in said wall, a drive shaft, a driven shaft in line with the drive shaft, a gear carried by each shaft, a transmission shaft provided at each end with a gear in mesh with the adjacent first-named gear, and connections between said drive and driven shafts and said platen for operating the latter when the former are in motion, said platen having an opening therein, and a ticket rest extending across said opening.
13. In a ticket printing machine, in combination, a casing having its front wall open, printing means, a movable platen cooper ating therewith and disposed vertically to close the opening in said wall, a drive shaft, a driven shaft in line with the drive shaft, connections between said shafts for causing the same to rotate in unison, and a cam secured to each shaft and arranged to engage the adjacent end of said platen for operating the latter during the rotation of said shafts, said platen having an opening therein, and a ticket rest extending across said opening.
14. In a ticket printing machine, in combi nation, a casing having its front wall open, printing means, a spring-controlled platen cooperation therewith and disposed vertically to substantially close the opening in the front of the casing, a drive shaft, a driven shaft, in line with the drive shaft, connections between said shafts for causing the same to rotate in unison, and a pair of toothed members secured to said shafts and arranged to engage said platen, for reciprocating the latter during the rotation of said shafts, said platen having an opening therein, and a ticket rest extending across said opening.
15. In a ticket printing machine, in combination, a casing having its front wall open, printing means, a movable platen cooperating therewith and disposed vertically to substantially close the opening in the front of the casing, rotatable operating means for said platen, and reverse-preventing means associated with said rotatable means and,
comprising a pair of connected levers, and means for operating said levers simultaneously.
16. In a ticket printing machine, in comb-ination, a casing having its front wall open, printing means, a movable platen cotiperating therewith and disposed vertically to substantially close the opening in the front of the casing, rotatable operating means for said platen, and reversepreventing means associated with said rotatable means and comprising a pair of connected bell-crank levers, and means for operating the free arms of said levers simultaneously.
17. In a ticket printing machine, the combination of printing means, a movable platen cooperating therewith, a drive shaft provided with means for operating said platen, and reverse-preventing means associated with said shaft and comprising a pair of connected levers, and a member carried by said shaft and provided with a projection arranged to operate said levers simultaneously, one lever having an end arranged normally in the path of said projection and the other lever having an end arranged normally out of the path of said projection.
18. In a ticket printing machine, the combination of printing means, a movable platen cooperating therewith, a drive shaft provided with means for operating said platen, and reverse-preventing means associated with said shaft and comprising a pair of levers, a link connecting the same, a member carried by said shaft and provided with a projection arranged to operate said levers simultaneously, and a spring connected with said link for normally holding both of said levers in operative position, one lever having an end arranged normally in the path of said projection and the other lever having an end arranged normally out of the path of said projection.
19. In a ticket printing machine, in com bination, a casing having its front wall open, a shaft journaled therein, a series of type carrying rolls mounted on said shaft in superposed relation, one of said rolls being fastened on said shafts and the remaining rolls loose, an operating head rigidly connected to one of said loose rolls, a gear rigidly secured to another of said loose rolls, a shaft arranged parallel with the first named shaft and provided with a gear meshing with the first named gear, for rotating the latter, and a movable platen coacting with all of said rolls and disposed parallel with said front wall for closing the opening therein.
20. In a ticket printing machine in combination, a casing having its front wall substantially open, a vertical shaft journaled therein, and provided with an operating head, a type roll fixed to the central portion of said shaft, a type roll loosely mounted on said shaft above the first named roll and provided with an operating head, a type roll mounted on said shaft below said first named roll and provided with a gear, a shaft j ournaled in said casing parallel with the first named shaft and provided with a gear in mesh with the first named gear, the second named shaft having an operating head, and
a movable platen coacting with all of said rolls and disposed parallel with said front wall for closing the opening therein.
21. In a ticket printing machine in combination a casing having its front wall substantially open, a vertical shaft journaled therein and carrying a series of independently adjustable type rolls arranged in s11- perposed relation, each of said rolls having a peripherally notched portion, a bar arranged parallel with said shaft and provided with a series of pawls engaging the notched rolls of the adjacent rolls, and a movable platen coacting with all of said rolls, said platen being mounted opposite said front wall to substantially close the opening therein and itself provided wit-h an opening, and a ticket rest extended across said opening.
22. In a ticket printing machine, in combination with a casing open upon its front wall and having its upper and lower Walls provided with pairs of lugs, said lugs having horizontal perforations formed therein, printing means located within said casing, a movable platen disposed parallel with the opening in the front wall and arranged for coaction with said printing means, and provided with spring controlled rods slidable through the perforations in the adjacent lugs, and means for moving said platen against the tension of the controlling springs, said platen having an opening and a ticket rest extending across said opening.
23. In a ticket printing machine, the combination with a casing having its front wall provided with an opening, of printing means disposed within said casing opposite said opening and an eXteriorly located platen movable toward said opening, and means disposed within the casing for actuating said platen in one direction, said platen being movable manually in the opposite direction in opposition to said means and having an opening, and a ticket rest extending across said opening.
