BEATING-ENGINE BED-PLATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AMEL F. BAHR and Or'ro B. BAHR, citizens of the United States, and residents of Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Beating- Engine Bed-Plates, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to bed plates for beating-engines and the object of our improvement is to provide a hollow bed plate having integrally formed teeth on both of its sides so that after the teeth on one side are worn away it may be turned over to use the teeth on its other side.
A further object is to provide a plurality of short cross teeth connecting the longer parallel teeth at intervals to prevent the stock from sliding longitudinally of such parallel teeth.
We attain these objects by means of the bed plate illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a transverse section of our bed plate and a portion of the roller of a beating engine; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the straight form of our bed plate with a portion of one of its faces removed to show the ribs connecting the two sides of the bed plate; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the elbow form of our bed plate; and, Fig. i is a view, in perspective, of a portion of the bed plate shown in Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
Our bed plate may be made of any suitable metal but we prefer to use an alloy of cast iron, steel and manganese to form a dis similar metal from the steel teeth of the grinding roller to reduce the friction produced between the grinding surfaces to a minimum. This alloy gives us a good hard grinding surface with suflicient tenacity not to become easily bent, chipped or broken should a particle of foreign matter get into the pulp-mixture. e form the bed plate hollow and as thin as practical in order to roduce its most efficient working qualities.
The hollow body portion of our improvement comprises the sides 5 joined at intervals by means of the ribs 6, which are disposed perpendicular to and extend from edge to edge of such sides, and the diagonal ribs 7 interposed between said ribs 6. Each of the diagonal ribs 7 is disposed at an angle to its next adjacent rib 7 substantially as illustrated, to brace the upper side of the bed plate to prevent the working strain from crushing such connecting ribs. The bead 8 is formed along each inside edge of said sides to strengthen such edges. By forming each alternate connecting rib in a diagonal relation with its next adjacent connecting rib and forming the beads 8 along the inner edges of said sides 5 we are able to form our body portion much thinner, thereby reducing the weight and the cost of manufacturing the bed plate.
Both of the sides 5 are provided, in a similar manner, with the cutting teeth 9 and the cross connecting teeth 10, so that when the teeth on one side are worn away the bed plate may be turned over to use the teeth on the other side, thereby increasing the life of the bed plate. The cross teeth 10 are provided at intervals between the cutting teeth 9 to prevent the pulp mixture from sliding along the edges of such cutting teeth and to aid in forcing the pulp mixture between the grinding surfaces. The faces of the teeth 9 and 10 are formed to conform with the curvature of the grinding roller 11, and a suitable supporting bed 12 is provided to fit and support the bed plate in the beating-engine.
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A beating-engine bed plate comprising a metallic body portion and a plurality of integrally formed cutting teeth on each of the two sides of such metallic body portion in a manner that said metallic body portion may be turned over after the cutting teeth on one of its sides have been worn away to use the cutting teeth on its other side.
2. A beating-engine bed plate comprising a hollow metallic body portion, a plurality of supporting ribs formed in the hollow portion of said hollow metallic body portion, each of said supporting ribs is disposed at an angle to its next adjacent supporting rib to brace each other, a plurality of integrally formed cutting teeth on each of the two sides of said hollow metallic body portion in a manner that said hollow metallic body portion may be turned over after the cutting teeth on one of its sides have been signed our names in the presence of two worn away to use the cutting teeth on its witnesses.
