To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs WINLAOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Niles, county of Berrien, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in printing presses and has for its object the provision of convenient and eflicient means for cooling the inking rolls thereof.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a printing press equipped with cooling means em-' bodying my invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the cooling means, Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation of the cooling means, Fig. f is an enlarged side elevation of the distributing chamber and connections employed in the cooling means, Fig. 5 is an enlarged section through the distributing chamber, and Fig. 6 is an enlarged section of one of the cooling pipes taken through the end opposite the distributing chamber.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the accompanying drawing comprises brackets 1 and 1 secured to the frame of the printing press and overhanging the ends of inking rolls 2. Each of the brackets 1 and 1 is provided with a central vertical notch or recess 3 and two downwardly and outwardly divergent side notches or recesses 4.-. Mounted in notches 3 and 4 are three pipes 5 having perforations 6 in their bottoms adapted to direct currents of air over inking rolls 2. Each of the pipes 5 is secured in bracket 1' by means of a nut 7 which also serves to close that end of the pipe. At their other ends pipes 5 pass through a distributing chamber 8 and are secured in position and closed by means of nuts 9 as shown. Each of the pipes 5 is provided with perforations 1O establishing communication with the interior of distributing chamber 8. A flexible hose 11 connects distributing chamber 8 with a suitable fan or other source of compressed air. By this construction it will be observed that air supplied through hose 11 to distributing chamber 8 will be directed over cooling rolls 2 in the form of small blasts and thus cool the same. It will be observed that the cooling chamber 8 serves to maintain pipes 5 in position in brackets 1 and 2 inasmuch as it is necessary for two side pipes 5 to approach each other in order to pass out of notches 4.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect this is capable of variation or modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact details set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with the inking rolls of a printing press of brackets located adjacent each end of said rolls, each of said brackets being provided with downwardly divergent notches; perforated pipes removably mounted in said notches, said pipes being closed at their ends; a distributing chamber secured to one end of said pipes, there being openings in said pipes communicating with said chamber; and a fan connection for said distributing chamber, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the inking rolls of a printing press of brackets located adjacent each end of said rolls, each of said brackets being provided with a central vertically disposed slot and downwardly divergent side notches, perforated pipes removably mounted in said notches, said pipes being closed at their ends; a distributing chamber secured to one end of said pipes, there being openings in said pipes communicating with said chamber; and a fan connection for said distributing chamber, sub stantially as described.
