Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that I, HENRY FENCE, J12, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eldorado, in the county of Prebleand State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm-Tractors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to farm tractors and is designed to construct a machine of this nature which will be simple, durable, and inexpensive.
It also contemplates the eonstructionoif the steering mechanism which will impart a slight resiliency to the forward rollers, but which will also be firm and secure in its operation.
A further object of the present invention is to construct a device of this nature, the forward rollers of which will operate between two rows while the rear wheels will straddle the rows and will operate upon onehalf of the next adjacent rows.
\Vith the above and other objects in view this invention consists in the clmstruction, combination, and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more fully described. claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, \\'h rein Figure 1 is a top plan view of a farm tractor of the class described, constructed in accordance with the present invention, part-s with the thereof being broken away; Fig. 9 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the forward roller; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a steering wheelwilluslratiug the connection thereof with the steering drum; Fig; 5 is a fragmentary view of the steering mechanism.
Reference being had more particularly to the drawings 10 indicates the side bars of the LfL'tUI'IOHVtH'li, being oil-set at their forward extremities 10. A drum 23 is mounted between the brackets 2 t of the side bars about which is wound a flexible member 95, said flexible member being secured to the rear terminals of the bolts, and centrally to the drum 23. It will thus be seen that upon rotating the drum the forward rollers may be turned in the direction desired. In order to provide a means whereby the drum may be rotated a worm gear 22 is carried at one terminal of the drum and cooperates with a worm 28 carried at the lower end of the shaft 29 journaled in the bearings 30, said' shaft having at its upper extremity a wheel 31. This construction permits the drum to be rotated in any direction desired by turning the wheel 31.
A driving shaft 31 is mounted on the frame adjacent and parallel to the axle 32, and is operated by the engine or motor indicated as A. At the extremity of the shaft 31 is rigidly carried the spur gear 33, said spur gear meshing with an annular gear 34, The annular gearv thereby driving the wheels 35. In order that p the width of the wheels will be increased, an extension plate 38 is secured to the outer edge of each wheel by detachable plates 39, thus doubling or otherwise widening the wheel.
The wheels 35 carriedat the terminals of the rear axle 32-are provided with the hub 40 from which extend the crossed spokes tl of the tread 35 of the wheel, thus supplying a certain rigidit and strength to the wheel.
Having thus ully described my invention what I claim as new is:
1. In a traction engine, the combination with a frame, a rear axle carr ed by said frame, wheels carried by said rear axle, means whereby said axle may be rotated, a U-shaped bar pivotally mounted on the forward extremity of said frame, an axle carried by the lower terminals of said U-shaped bar, wheels carried by said axle, a semicircular, horizontal, rearwardly extending angle bar carried by the downwardly extending portions of said 'U- shaped bar, parallel brackets on the under side of said frame, rollers carried by said brackets adapted to conform with the shape of said angle bar, and means whereby said angle bar may be swung to swing said U-shaped bar about its pivotal point.
2. In a traction engine, the combination with a frame, a rear axle carried by said frame, wheels carried by said rear axle, means whereby said axle may be rotated, a U-shaped bar pivotally mounted on the forward extremity of said frame, an axle carried by the lower terminals of said Ushaped bar, wheels carried by said axle, a semicircular, horizontal, rearwardly extending angle barcarried by the downwardly extending portions of said U-shaped bar, parallel brackets on the under side of said frame, an angular curved roller carried by said brackets adapted to form a be'aring'for the outer side of said semicircular angle bar, a beveled roller superposed above said curved roller adapted to bear against the inner surface of said angle bar, and means whereby said angle bar may be swung thereby swinging said U-shaped bar about its pivotal point.
