Description

dinitd mes pme entre.
JOHN H. .Do'EEE 0E PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Potent No. 99,298, dated .February 1, 1870.
IMPRGVED CHAIN 0R BAND.
The Schedule referred to in these Letten Patent and making part of the same.
' by, declare that the'following isa full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same,'referencc being had to the annexed drawings, Vmaking a part Jof this specification, in which- Figure l represents a side view ofthe show.-
ingthe links loosely connected. v
Figure 2 represents the inner side of the chain.
Figure 3, the top side of the same.
Figures 4 and 5 show the positionof two single links to eachother, for the-purpose of joiningl them.
Figure 6 is a side view of .the spring.
Similar letters ofvrcference indicate corresponding parts in the several igures.
The object of my 'invention is to construct springs, chains, and endless bands from a suitable number of sections or links, in such a. manner that all the -sec-- tions or links composing the said springs, chains, or= bands, can be easily put together and detached Afrom each other., 4
My improved springs I propose to use as a motive .power for driving machinery, lifting weights, &c.
My improved chains and endless bands. I propose to' use for the purpose oftlansmitting power, and 'in many cases where common chains, common'iron bands, or wire ropes arenow employed, as, for in# stance, inthe construction of suspensionehridges.l V Tov enable others skilled' in the -art to make and ense myinventiemi willproce'edv-to describe its construction 'and operation My improved spring, chain,or -.hand consists of a suitable nnmberof sections or'links, made of steel, V band-iron, or other suitable material. ,g
`Each section or link is 4provided with a crescent-A shaped heed or hook, which is slightly bent, and with a triangular slot or eye, s, in the middle, as shown-in figs. 4 and 5..
j- In order to connect these sections, I have to hook` or attach one section to the other, by means of the head a: and the slot s, and to proceed in this way till all the sections which compose my improved spring, chain, or band arc in their regular position, as shown in figs. 2 and 3.
In the construction of my improved chains or end- -less bands, I ,use sections of uniform length, which ought to be only long enough to overlap each other; so'far as to cover the slots s s but in the construc- 'tion of -my improved spiral springsI use sections of dierent, gradually-increasing length. The shortest section I lplace in the centre of the spiral, th'e next in length is hooked tothe lfirst, and so forth, each following overlapping the preceding, till all are attached to each other, as shown in fig. 6.
In this way, one section serving as support to the other, I multiply the thickness l and increase the strength of my improved springs, chains, and bands,
i and besides this, I gain the advantage that if a breakage should occur, it will be suiiicient to detach and take out the broken' section and replace it by asound one. The whole will thcn be as perfect as before, and need not to be thrown away. it
To springs constructed in sections, after my plan,
can evidentlybe given a more uniform temper and a greater strength than to common springs, and chains manufactured inthe above-described manner will bey c stronger, because their links cau'be cut out of bandiron or steel, without'any welding or'riveting, which weakens ordinary chains.
What I claim as-my invention, and desire tovsecure by Letters Patent, is
j The construction of springs, chains, or vendless bands of a number of detachable sections or links,
each provided with the peculiarly formed head or hook x, and the slot or eye s, contiguous to said head,
in the manner and for the purposesv substantially asv set forth.
