Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom 'it may concer/n.:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. NELSON, a citizen of theV United States, residin at Timpson, in the county of Shelby and tate of Texas, have invented a new and useful Sand-Band, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to carriages and wagons, and more particularly to sand bands for the hubs thereof; and the object of the same is to produce a device of this character adjustable within limits to hubs of various sizes, and so constructed that it may be readily applied to axles as now commonly made.
To this end the invention consists in a sand band embodying the details described and claimed below and as shown in the drawings, wherein,-
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the axle and hub, showing my sand band in place over the inner end of the latter and a dust cap inserted in the outer end thereof. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improvement. Fig. 3 is an outer end view thereof. Fig. 4 is a detail in section on the line 4 4 of Fi 2.
Reirring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the metal portion and 2 the wooden portion of the ordinary axle, the former having the usual collar 3 and spindle 4, which receives a nut 5 at its outer end. 6 designates the hub having a band 7 extending beyond its outer end around said nut, and 8 is a dust cap removably engaging said band to keep dust and the like from gaining admission to the outer end of the *l hub and spindle.
Coming now more particularly to my present invention, the sand band best seen in Fig. 2 comprises two substantially like members adapted to be held under the clip 9 which usually embraces the axle, and above its plate 10, as best seen in Fig. 1. The upper member of the sand band numbered 11 has its inner end 12 curved over the top so as to ft beneath the clip 9, while the lower member numbered 21 has its inner end 22 flattened to tit beneath the rectangular metal portion 1 of the axle and above the flat clip plate 10. From said inner end both members extend outward and are then enlarged into shoulders 13 and 23 respectively, be-

at the sides of the complete device. One member as the innermost is provided with upright slots 26, and through these and the other member 15 are passed rivets 16 as best seen in Fig. 4. This form of connection between the members permits their adjustment so that their semi-cylindrical ends 14 and 24 may be adapted to the inner `extremities or hubs which vary within reasonable limits, and yet the connection afforded by the rivets 16 is to a degree pivotal so that the members may be swung one upon the other' as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
In applying this device to an axle, the nut 5 is unscrewed and the hub 6 removed, then the members of the sand band are swung upon each other as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, so that the entire device can be passed along over the spindle 4 and over the collar 3; and the members are then swung toward each other to full-lined position of Fig. 2 when it is intended that their inner ends 12 and 22 will fit the top and bottom of the axle respectively. Meanwhile the nuts on the clip are loosened and the clip body 9 is raised from the axle while the clip plate 10 is lowered, and in bringing the sand band into final position the inner end 12 of its upper member is passed under the clip body 9 and the inner end 22 of its lower member above the clip plate 10, after which the nuts are tightened up as will be clear. The tightening of these nuts will naturally draw the members toward each other and their semi-cylindrical ends 14 and 24 will slip upon each other where they lap, as permitted by the rivets and slots, so thatfthe device automatically contracts around the inner end of the hub. Thus it will be seen that I have produced a sand band which within limits is adapted to hubs of various sizes and to axles of various sizes, and whose attachment to the latter is by means of the clip which ordinarily exists at a convenient point thereon. If used in conjunction with the dust ca 8 referred to above, this sand band will e ectually prevent dust from gaining admission to the inner end of the spindle and thus the latter is kept practically dust proof. The parts of my device are preferably entirely of sheet metal, stamped or formed by any suitable process vinto the proper shape and proportion.
What I claim is l. A sand band for the inner end of a wheel hub, the same comprising an upper member shaped at its inner end to t over the rounded portion of the axle, a lower member shaped at its inner end to fit beneath the lower portion of the axle, the members lapping each other vand being semieylindrical at their outer ends to lit the inner end of the hub, and pivotal connections between the outer ends of the members at their sides.
2. A sand band for the inner end of a wheel hub, the same comprising an upper member shaped at its inner end to t over the upper portion of the axle, a lower member shaped at its inner end to lit beneath the lower portion of the axle, the members lapping each other and being semi-cylindrical l at their outer ends to lit the inner end of the f hub, one member having upright slots, and
rivets through the other member loosely engaging said slots.
3. The combination with a wheel hub, an axle, a spindle, a shoulder between them, and a clip around theaxle; of a sand band comprising upper and lower members having their inner ends shaped to fit respectively above the axle beneath the olip-body and below the axle above the clip-plate and the outer ends semi-cylindrical to ft around the inner end of the wheel hub, and each having a shoulder between its ends, the extremities of the semi-cylindrical portions lapping eaeh other and one of them having an upright slot, and a rivet through the other member loosely engaging said slot.
