Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23, 1911.
Application filed .Tune 11, 1910. Serial No. 566,412.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAIAH SPEOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabethville, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ensilage Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to a cover for use in connection with silos, to preserve the ensilage and prevent it from becoming moldy or sour, my object being to provide a cover which may be constructed to fit any size or shape of silo, whether square, circular, oblong, octagonal or otherwise, and which is adapted to fit a silo even though the same should have partially lost its original shape, and completely cover and protect the upper portion of the ensilage, and also adapted for use in connection with divers other vessels or receptacles, such as tanks, cisterns, basins, etc., large or small, whether square, circular, oblong, octagonal or any other shape, whose sides are perpendicular or slanting, where such an adjustable cover may be desired.
With this in mind, my invention resides in the features of construction and arrangement to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in hlch Figure 1 is a cross section through a silo, looking down upon my improved cover;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough taken on'line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures, my improved cover comprises a main central portion 10 (either square or rectangular), along the four sidesof which are hinged, by hinges 11, four wings, 12,13, 14, and 15, the outer edges of which are curved so that together they may form a circle; or, if the silo or other receptacle where the cover is used be square, oblong, rectangular, octagonal or otherwise, the outer edges of the wings are constructed to conform to the shape required to provide a complete cover.
The contiguous edges of the main portion 10 and the wings, are spanned by strips 16 of elastic material so as to permit of movement of said wings upon their hinges, while a second and continuous strip 17 of the same Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents" each, by addressing the Washington, D. 0.
material is secured around the outer edges of said wings and projects slightly therefrom. The main portion 10 also has a central eye-bolt 18 in which one end of a double hook member 19 is engaged, its opposite end being adapted to be engaged by a suitable hoist (not shown) for ralsing and lowering the cover. The member 19 also has four intermediate loops 20 to which are adjustably connected the inner ends of chains 21, the outer ends of which are connected to the four wings. Short chains 22 extend from the main cover portion 10, adjacent its side edges, and are connected to the wing chains 21 to insure a uniform lift when the cover is being raised. Thus, in the process of lifting the cover by the hoist, chains 21 attached to the wings, will raise the latter and thereby reduce the circumference of the cover, so it can readily be raised orlowered in the silo. When the entire cover is to be lifted to the roof of the silo, wings 13 and 15 are removed and placed on top of cover by removing the pins of their hinges 11, while wings 12 and. 14 are laid fiat inward, thus A cover for silos and the like comprising a main central portion, wings hinged thereto, a hoisting hook, a connection between said hook and the aforesaid central portion of the cover, and connections between the,
hoisting hook and the wings.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
