Description

waited Statut @anni @time SAMUEL BABBITT, OF BRA-ZILLINVDIAA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND GEORGE W. OBR, OF SAME PLACE.
Leners Patent N .99,281, dated February 1, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOTS AND SHOES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it 'may 'conce/rn Be it known that I, SAMUEL BABBITT, of Brazil, in the county of Clay, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the-art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side View, partly in section, of my improved boot.
Figure 2 is a detail section'oi' a portion of the upper.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
.The object of this invention is'to so construct boots and shoes that the same will be at once water-tight and warm, and that the soles will be strengthened, and not apt to wear at or near the toes.
The invention consists, chiefly, in interposing a piece of annel, or other fabric, between two layers ofleather, which constitute the upper of the boot or shoe. v A, in the drawing, is the outer leather, which constitutes the upper of a hoot or shoe.
B is the inner lining of leather in the same.
C is a layer of flannel, interposed between the two sheets of leather.
The inner lining B, of leather, is laid around the insole D, as usual, while the flannel, and outer layer A,
are laid around a sole, E, which is placed against the outer face of the insole, as shown in iig. 2, the main outer sole F being applied to the Vouter side ofthe sole E. By the use of the intermediate sole E, the boot is made still more water-proof, and even if water should enter at the seam of the outer sole, it .cannot pass through the inner lining of leather.
Gais a sectional sole, made convex on oneV side, and secured to the sole E, as shown, to produce a curved lower face ot sole, ou which the foot may rock, The sole is thereby prevented from wearing at the toe.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lett-ers Patent- 1. A bcot or shoe, having the several uppers and series of soles, as specified, all being constructed and fitted together in the manner set forth.
2. A boot or shoe-upper, formed of two sheets of leather, and one of woollen fabric, the former being fitted with separate seams, and the latter interposed between them, in the manner described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 18th day of October, 1869.
SAMUEL BABBITT.
