In the operation of this device when two cars are brought together the washer 24 of one car will strike the washer 2a of the other car and this will cause each of the members 18 to be forced backward until the cars are coupled when they will be maintained in this position so long as the cars remain together. When in the forward position the valve 29 lies across the bore 21 but as the member 18 is pushed backward the ends ofthe rock arms 31 will be prevented from moving backward therewith and this will cause the valve 29 to rotate through a quarter of a circle and open communication between the portions of the member 18 lying on each side thereof. This backward motion is permitted by the yielding of the spring and the swinging of the triangular supporting plate 12. As soon, however, as thecars are separated the spring 22 will again force the member 18 away from the center of the car and this will close the valve by the arm 31 moving through a quarter of a circle in the reverse direction to that just described.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a device of the kind described, a coupling member provided with a fiat e11- gaging face at right angles to the axis of the member, and means to yieldably support said member for longitudinal movement beneath a. car, said means comprising a hanger swung from the bottom of a car and pivoted to said coupling member, a coil spring surrounding said member and havin g an upturned rear end provided with an eye adapted for attachment to a car, and a collar on said member resting againstthe forward end of the spring.
'2. In a device of the kind described, a coupling member provided with a flat engaging face at right angles to the axis of the member, said face havingan annular elastic washer secured thereto, and means to yieldably support said member for longitudinal movement beneath 'a' car, said means comprising a hanger swun from the bottom of a car and pivoted to said coupling 'member, a'coil spring-surrounding said member and having an upturned rear end provided with an eye adapted for attachment to a car, and a collar on said member resting against the forward end of the spring.
3. In a device of the kind described, a
hollow coupling member of uniformbore throughout and proyidedzwith an enlarged end having a flat engaging face at right angles to the axis of the member, and means to yieldably support said member for longitudinal movement beneath a car, said means comprising a hanger swung from the bottom of a car "and pivoted to said coupling memher, a coil spring surrouuding'said member and having an upturned rear end provided with an eye adapted for attachment to a car, and a collar on said member resting against the forward end of the spring.

In a device of the kind described, a hollow'coupling member of uniform bore throughout andprovided with an enlarged end having a flat engaging face at right angles to the axis of the member, said face havingapaiiannular elastic washer secured thereto, and means to yieldably support said member for longitudinal movement beneath a car, said means comprising a hanger swung from the bottom of a car and pivoted to said-coupling member, a coil spring surrounding said member and having an upturned rear end provided with an eye adapted for attachment to a car, and a collar on said member resting against the forward end of the spring.

Iii a device of the kind described, a coupling member provided with a flat engaging face at right angles to the axis of the member, means to yieldably support said member for longitudinal movement beneath a car, and a valve in said member actuated by the movement thereof, said means comprising a hanger swun from the bottom of a car and pivoted to sai coupling member, a coil spring surrounding said member a'nd having an upturned rear end provided with an eye adapted for attachment to a car, and a collar on said member resting against the forward end of the' spring. v
6. In adevice of the kind described, .a coupling member provided with a flat engaging face'at right angles to the axis of the member, said face having an annular elastic washer secured thereto, means toyieldably support said member for longitudinal movement beneath a car, and a valve in saidmember actuated by the movement swung from the bottom of a car and pivoted. to said coupling member, a coil spring surrounding said member and having an upthereof, said means comprising a hangerturned rear endprovided with an eye adapt- .--ed for attachment to a car, and a collar on said member resting against the forward end of the spring.

In a device of the kind described, a coupling member provided with a flat engaging face-disposed at right anglesto the axis of the member, means to yieldably support said member for longitudinal movement beneath a car, a valve in said member provided with stems projecting laterally through the said member, rock arms fixedly connected to the stems, the free ends of said arms being dis osed in spaced relation, a
