CENTER-PIN FOR LOCOMOTIVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD ELDoN WAR- NER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harvey, in the county of WVells and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Center-Pin for Locomotives, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in center pins for locomotives.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of center pins for locomotives, and to provide asimple, inexpensive and efiicient device, capable of reducing the liability of breakage of the king bolt, and adapted in event of the breakage of the same to enable such part to be easily and quickly replaced while on the road without impairing the efliciency of the locomotive.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the a scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of'the invention.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of a portion of a locomotive equipped with a center pin, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig.2 is a plan view of the center pin. Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 4. is a similar view of the upper portion of the center pin, taken at right angles to Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the top plate.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a hollow center pin, designed to be mounted on the supporting bolster of the pony truck 3 of a mogul or other locomotive. The center in 1 is constructed of suitable material an of proper dimensions to adapt it for the character of locomotive on which it is to be used, and it is provided with an enlarged lower end or baselongitudinal opening 6, through which passes a king bolt 7 having the usual eye 8 at its lower end for the reception of the front end of the intermediate equalizer 9 of the locomotive. The center pin'is provided in the opposite walls of its opening 6 with longitudinal grooves 10, oblong in cross section and having parallel side walls forming a passage-way for the eye 8 of the kingbolt for enabling the latter to be introduced into the center pin from the top thereof, whereby in the event of breakage of the king bolt, such part may be replaced on the road in a short time leaving the locomotive after the break has been repaired in as good condition as before the break without having its efficiency impaired or without necessitating any reduction in the speed of the locomotive. This also eliminates the liability of accidents, which often result when it is necessary to chain up the pony truck and the equalizer, as is necessary in event of breakage of the king bolt of an ordinary center 12 to complete the curvature of the interior of the opening 6. The spaced bars or members 11 are preferably formed integral with and depend from a top plate 13, having a flat lower face 14. to fit the fiat upper edge of the hollow center pin, and provided .with depending studs 15, fitting in corresponding recesses 16 in the upper edge of the center pin for interlocking the top plate with the center pin when the parts are assembled. The top plate is provided in its upper face with a bearing socket 17 to receive a truncated ball head 18, having a fiat upper face and presenting a rounded lower face to cooperate with the socket to form a ball and socket joint or connection. The rounded or ball head is adapted to yield to the movements of the king bolt, and reduce to a minimum the liability of breakage of the same. It is provided with a central opening 19 to receive the upper portion .of the king bolt, which has its upper terminal 20 threaded for the reception of a nut 21. The nut is seated upon the flat upper face of the truncated ball head, and the ball or bearing head 18 is provided with lubricant passages 22, extending through the head from the upper face thereof to the bearing plate of the face 13 for lubricating the bearing. Recesses 23 may be formed in the upper face of the bear ing head to receive a quantity of waste or other absorbent material for holding the lubricant, and suitable pivot plates 24: may be employed for covering the grooves to exclude dust and other grit from the lubricant. A safety chain 25 is also preferably employed for connecting the bearing head with the top plate to prevent loss of the bearing head in event of breakage of the king bolt. The center pin 1 supports a casting 26 of the usual construction, and it is adapted for use on all types of locomotives employing pony trucks.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A hollow center pin having a circular king bolt opening and longitudinally grooved or enlarged thereat to form a passage-way for the eye of a king bolt, and removable means for completing the center pin to preserve the circular character of the king bolt opening.
2. A hollow center pin having a king bolt opening and provided in the walls thereof with opposite grooves extending the entire length of the king bolt opening and forming a passage-way to permit the eye of a king bolt to pass through the said opening.
3. A hollow center pin having a king bolt opening and provided in the walls thereof with opposite grooves forming a passage or way for the eye of a king bolt, and removable means normally arranged in said grooves for completing the walls of the said king bolt opening and adapted to be taken out in event of breakage of the king bolt to permit a new part to be inserted in place from the top of the center pin.
4s. A hollow center pin having a king bolt opening and provided in the walls thereof with opposite grooves forming a passage or way for the eye of a king bolt, and a top plate seated upon the center pin and provided with means fitting in and filling the grooves of the center pin to complete the walls of the king bolt opening.
5. A hollow center pin having a king bolt opening and provided in the walls thereof with opposite grooves forming a passage or way for the eye of a king bolt, and a top plate seated upon the upper end of the center pin and provided with spaced integral depending bars or members fitting in and filling the grooves of the center pin to complete the walls of the king bolt opening and removable from the grooves to permit the eye of a king bolt to be passed through the center pin from the top thereof.
6 A hollow center pin having a king bolt opening and provided in the walls thereof with opposite grooves forming a passage or way for the eye of a king bolt, a top plate seated upon the upper end of the center pin and provided with spaced integral depending bars or members fitting in and filling the grooves of the center pin to complate the walls of the king bolt opening and removable from the said grooves, and cooperating means on the top plate and the center pin for interlocking the former With the latter.
7. A hollow center pin having a horizontal bolt opening and provided in the walls thereof with opposite grooves forming a passage or way for the eye of a king bolt, a top plate seated upon the center pin and provided at its upper face with a hearing socket, and a bearing head having a rounded bearing face to fit the socket of the top plate and provided with an opening to receive the upper end of the king bolt.
8. A hollow center pin having a king bolt opening and provided in the walls thereof with opposite grooves to form a passage or way for the eye of a king bolt, a cap plate seated upon the upper end of the hollow center pin and provided with depending bars or members fitting in and filling the grooves of the center pin and completing the walls of the king bolt opening, a cap plate seated upon the upper end of the center pin and provided in its upper face with a bearing socket, and a truncated ball head having an opening to receive the king bolt and presenting a rounded lower face to the bearing socket.
9. A hollow center pin having an enlarged hollow approximately semi-spherical base and provided with a central circular king bolt opening, said center pin being provided in the walls of its king bolt opening with longitudinal grooves of a shape to permit the passage of the head of a king bolt, a top plate seated upon the upper end of the center pin and provided with rigid depending bars or members fitting in the grooves of the center pin and extending from the top thereof to the base of the same and having curved inner faces completing the curved walls of the king bolt opening, and a bearing seated upon the top plate and adapted to be connected to the upper end of the king bolt.
