ROTARY EXCAVATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed June 28, 1910. Serial No. 569,609.
To all whom 'it may concern.
Be it known that I, THOMAS FAHEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of I/Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Excavators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to excavators and has for its purpose to provide an apparatus so constructed that by a rotary motion it will pick up dirt and gravel and carry the same to a position where it can be picked up and transferred by other mechanical means to a predetermined place. This I accomplish by the construction of a cylinder adapted to be mounted upon a horizontal shaft and provided with plows and peculiarly constructed apartments with open ports on both sides thereof, such cylinder being firmly secured to the horizontal shaft and adapted to rotate therewith.
Figure 1 is a front view of the cylinder, Fig. 2, is a side view thereof, Fig. 3, is a broken away rear view thereof and Fig. 4, is a sectional view thereof taken on the line 1 -4 of Fig. 1.
The cylinder 10 and the sprocket wheel 11 are firmly secured tothe shaft 12, the shaft 12 anchored in a horizontal position is secured to a frame upon trucks for convenience of working and in moving. The cylinder 10 is divided into apartments 13 separated by walls 26 perpendicular with the fiat sides of the drum, each of which has an entering port 14 and a discharge port 15 and inwardly and centrally inclined foot walls 27. The entrance ports 141 are on the outside of the cylinder 10 near the periphery thereof and the discharge ports 15 are on the inside of the cylinder 10 near the shaft 12. Leading to the entrance ports 111 are open chutes 16, the outer ends of which terminate in plows 17.
In the practical operation of the excavator, the whole is mounted upon a frame, withproper bearings for the shaft 12, and secured to a truck for convenience in moving. The power of whatsoever kind it is -desired to use, is applied to the excavator by means of an endless chain, operating over the sprocket wheel 11 secured to the shaft 12. The cylinder 10 is by this means set in motion and rotates with the shaft 12. The plows 17 cut into the dirt and gravel in their downward motion and on the upward motion thereof the dirt and gravel. by means of gravity pass down the chutes 16, through the ports 14 to the apartments 13 and then along the inwardly and centrally inclined foot walls 27 to and through the ports 15 where the same is picked up by any desired convenient means and conveyedto the desired location.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
An excavator consisting of a cylinder mounted upon a shaft, and divided into apartments with inwardly and centrally inclined foot walls, such apartments having entrance ports on the outside thereof near the periphery and discharge ports on the inside thereof near the shaft, open chutes leading to the outside ports, the outer ends of such chutes terminating in plows, the whole adapted to be connected up with continuously moving machinery and to rot-ate, substantially as described.
