Letters Patent No. 99,210, dated January 25, 1870.
IMPROVED RAILWAY-CAR WHEEL.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all vhbm it may concern Be it known that I, A. KOMP, of the city, county, and State of New ,York, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Oar-Wheels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference ."be-ing had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a face view of this invention.
Figure 2. is a transverse section of the same,
Similar-letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a car-wheel, the body of which consists of an annular disk, or of a series of its outer end, on which the tire of the wheel is cast, in such a manner that as the tire shrinks, in cooling, it embraces tightly the disk or the arms, and at the same time, the inherent elasticity of the curved flanges of said disk or arms, allows suflicient play to prevent the tire from cracking.
The annular disk, or the arms, are also provided with an internal flange, onwhich the hub is cast, and said disk or arms may be corrugated, so that the same preserve a certain degree of elasticity throughout, whereby the durability riall y increased.
The disk (or arms) is strengthened by a secondary disk, (secondary arn|s,) provided with a curved flange at the inner edge, whereby the strength of the con nection between the hub and the body of the wheel ismaterially increased.
f In the drawing, the letter A designates the body of my car-wheel, which, in this example, is composed of an annular disk, of sheet-steel or other material of a similar nature, said disk being provided with a curvedflange, a, on its outer edge, and with a curved flange, b, on its inner edge.
. B is the tire, which is cast on the curved flange a, of the disk, and p .0 is the hub, which is cast into the opening of the disk, and on the curved flange b.
As the tire shrinks, in cooling, it tightly embraces the disk A, and the inherent elasticity of the curved flange it prevents the tire from'cracking while the of the wheel, and the ease' with which the same moves on the track, are mate- The disk A, however, instead of being made fiat between its curved flanges a and l), is corrugated, so
that the same will have a certain degree of elasticity, whereby the wheel is enabled to pass with great case over inequalities in the track, and the wheeland other parts of the rolling stock are saved from much wear, which is due to the rigid nature of ordinary car-wheels.
\Vith the disk A is combined a secondary -annular disk, I), which isalso provided with a curved flange, d, at its inner edge, while it is fastened at its outer edge to the disk A, by means of rivets, or in any other suitable manner.
By this secondary disk, the connection between the hub and the body of the wheel is materially strengthened, since thehub, when cast'npon the two flanges, b and (I, obtains a firm hold, and is not liable to work loose.
It is obvious that for the disks A I), as shown in the drawing, a series of arms might. be substituted, each of which would represent a section of the disk A or D, and thereby the result produced would be substantially the same as thatshown and described.
The secondary disk D, or its section, may be made to extend the whole distance of the main disk, or its sections, and thereby the strength of the whole wheel can be still further increased.
\Vhat I claim as new,-aud desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1, The annular disk A, either solid or in sections,
provided with a curved flange, a, in combination with,
the tire'B east thereon, described.
2. The annular disk A, either solid or in sections, provided with an internal flangefb, in combination with the hub 0, cast thereon, substantially as specified. i
3. The secondary disk, either solid or in sections, in combination withthe disk A, either solid or in sections, and with the tire B and hub (3, all constructed and connected substantially in the manner set forth.
A. KOMP.
substantially as shown and Witnesses W. Hanan, E. 1 Kssrnnunsnn.
