LUBRICATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HARRY J. LIVERPOOL, of Dorchester, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
This invention has reference to improvements in lubricators and particularly to im provements in lubricators having means whereby the flow of lubricant is automatically controlled.
The object of the invention is to provide an automatic lubricator that shall be sensitive in its operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a thermostatic controlled lubricating device having novel characteristics.
Another object of the invention is to so construct a thermostatic controlled or actuated valve for a lubricator that a visual signal is given at the operation of said valve actuating device.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the lubricator, its feed valve and the novel actuator for said feed valve.
The invention also consists in the peculiar thermostatic operating means for said valve actuator.
The invention also consists in such other novel features of construction and combination of parts as shall hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in the claims.

As shown herein in its preferred form, 5 represents the screw threaded end, of the tubular stem 6, which is adapted to be secured in the wall of a bearing to be lubricated. The diameter of the stem 6 is greater than that of the end 5 to furnish a shoulder against which the bottom plate 7 is secured by the nut 8 screwed onto the end 5, while the upper portion of said stem is furnished with a slot through which the shaft 9, jourvided with the valve actuating member 10 having the curved upper surface 11 and the depending point 12, said shaft 9 being also journaled in the sleeve 13, of the post 141: mounted on the plate 7 and being provided at its outer end with the signal arm 15.
On the plate 7 is mounted the holder 1G for the annular thermostatic member comprising two plates 17 and 18 of metal having different degrees of expansibility under change of temperature. At the free end of said thermostatic member, which end has a movement under the expansion and contraction of its components, is mounted a frame having the arms 19 and 20 furnished with the flexible cable or wire 21 which, having its ends secured to said arms 19 and 20, is wound around the shaft 9 and is or may be secured thereto at some one point by solder so that any movement of the thermostatic member will be transmitted, by the arms 19 and 20 and the wire 21, to effect the rotative movement of the shaft 9 to swing upward the valve actuator 10, when the thermostatic member or element expands under the rise of temperature, and to swing said actuator downward when said thermostatic element contracts as the temperature is lowered.
Embracing the thermostatic element is the wall 22 preferably of glass or other transparent material and preferably having an opening 23 through which the shaft 9 extends if said shaft 9 is suiciently long.
The oil reservoir 25 has the bottom 26 which is mounted on the wall 22 and is secured in place preferably by the screws 27, 27 which extend through perforations in said bottom 26 and are secured in the plate 7. Tube 28 extends through a central opening in the bottom 26 and forms a continuation of the tubular post 6 and is furnished with perforations 30, 30 through which lubricant may flow from the reservoir 25. Interiorly said tube 28 is screw threaded at its lower end to receive the screw threaded hollow plug 31 which may be adjusted vertically by means of its stem 32 and thumb nut 33 while the lower portion of said plug has a valve seat having an axial perforation through which the needle 34, of the spring pressed valve 35, extends and bears against the surface 1l of the valve actuatorV 10.
When, now, the valve actuator 10 is swung upward by the rotation of shaft 9, the valve 35 is moved upward against the resistance of naled in said sleeve 6, extends and is prol its spring and the lubricant flows through the perforation in the valve seat and drops on to the curved surface of the valve actuator and runs down to the point 12 thereof fromy which it drops through the bore of post 6 on to the shaft to be lubricated. When the temperature of the bearing, to which this lubricator is attached, is reduced through the application of the lubricant the thermostatic element contracts and the shaft 9 is so rotated that the valve actuator 10 swings downward and permits the valve 35 to close whereby the flow of lubricant is stopped.
The arm 15 forms a visual signal through which the action of the shaft 9 and the valve actuator 10 is indicated and, within limits, said shaft 9 may be manually rocked by slightly vibrating said arm.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
1. A lubricator comprising a reservoir having an outlet, a valve for closing said outlet, a shaft journaled in bearings, a valve actuator mounted on said shaft, and thermostatic means for rocking said shaft, substantially as described.
2. A lubricator comprising a reservoir having an outlet, a valve for closing said outlet, a tubular member forming a passage below said outlet, a transverse shaft journaled in the wall of said tubular member, a valve actuator mounted on said shaft within said member, and thermostatic means for rocking said shaft, substantially as described.
3. A lubricator comprising a reservoir having an outlet, a tubular member forming a passage below said outlet, a transverse shaft journaled in the wall of said member, a valve actuator mounted on said shaft within said member and a thermostaticelement embracing said tubular member, and having n Ameans for transmitting motion from said ele- Witnesses:
