Be it knownthat I, Janus E. GARDNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Luke, in the county of'Allegany and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which'it appertains to make and use the same. I

This invention relates to -new and useful improvements in railroad ties, and has for an object the provision of a device of this character which is so constructed as to provide a sufficient cushion for the rails to be mounted thereon.

Another object of this invention is the provision of a railroad tie provided with a novel means for securing the customary rails thereon.

A further object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efficient in use, and readily operated.

With the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations. and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which 7 Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tie; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section therethrough; Fig. .3 is a transverse sectional view taken through my improved railroad tie in the same plane as one of the rails; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig; 3 taken intermediate of the rails.-

Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates generally my improved tie, comprising a'substantially rectangular plate 2, upon the upper face'of which, at its opposite ends, are mounted pocket-forming extensions 3, comprising opposite side walls 1, connected at t-heiropposite ends by end walls 5, which are slightly less in height than the above-mentioned side walls, for a purpose to-be hereinafter described.

The inner of the side walls 4 are connected by means of webs 6, while the outer ends are braced by means of webs 7, which connect them with theends of the plate 2. The outer faces of the side walls at of the pocketforming extensions are provided with v'erti cal grooves 78, which extend substantially half the height of the said walls, and are connected with the upper edges thereof by means of centrally disposed apertures 9. Bolts 10 are adapted to be extendedthrough these apertures 9 by sliding the same upward along the slots 8 until the upper end protrudes a sufficient distance'above the upper edges of the side-at of the before-mentioned pocket-forming extensions.

The insides of the pocket-forming extensions are adapted to receive rectangular cushioning blocks 11, which extend slightly above the end walls of the pocket-forming extensions, and upon which rest rails 12. The

side walls 4 of the pocket-forming extensions, as before mentioned, .are extended slightly above the end walls, and lie in substantially the same horizontal plane as top of the base flanges of the rails 12.

Washers 13 are located upon-the apertured I ends of the bolts 10, and are adapted to contact with the upper edges of the side walls of the pocket-forming extensions and the base flanges of the said rails. Nuts 14 are threaded upon the upper terminals of the bolts 10 and are adapted to be retained in place by a cotter pin or any other suitable locking mechanism.

- 'From the foregolng disclosure it will be manifest that a railroad tie is provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.

Having thus fully described this invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
