Be it known that I, GEORGE C. INADLEIGH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Cooking-Stoves, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a speciiication, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

My invention applies to usual cooking stoves, whereby a construction is provided which insures better draft and facilitates the use of the broiler. To this end I provide at the front side and top of the rebox a hinged draft member which constitutes a part of the top, extending back. approximately to the lids and there provided with depending prongs or apertured barriers to preventthe lodgment of fuel on top of the front wall of the firebox, and at the rear of the lids I provide the stove top with similar depending prongs or apertured barriers to` prevent the lodgment of fuel on top of the rear wall of the iirebox. Preferably the latter prongs at their lower ends are provided with rests, so that when said hinged front member is turned downward, a toaster or broiler may be readily held in operative position thereby.

My invention will be further set forth in its structural details in the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which I have shown a preferred embodiment of the invention.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the front portion of a stove containing my invention, said figure being taken on the line 1 1, Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the stove, partly broken away for clearness of illustration; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in front elevation of the rear coal-barrier and broiler-rest.

It will be understood that my invention is not restricted to any particular kind or construction of cooking stove or range, and accordingly I have omitted showing mostof the details of the stove proper, and have shown in the drawings merely a sufficient portion of the parts adjacent the irebox 1 to render my invention readily understood. The front wall 2 of the rebox is shown as provided with a tubular water front 3 and with a usual top plate 4. It rests on the front 5 of the grate bar frame, whose rear part 6 supports the rear wall '7 ofthe firebox, a grate S being provided at the bottom of said iirebox. The type of stove illustrated has its top 9 provided with a front part 10 pivotally supported at its rear corners l1 so as to be capable of being held in an inclined position by a pivoted rack or notched support 12 when desired.

At the upper front portion of the stove is a transverse casting 13 pivoted at 14 to the top of the stove front 15. This casting 13 extends back at 16 to constitute the front part of the stove top, being provided with a ledge 17 which supports the swinging part 10 of said top adjacent the griddles or stove lids 18. From the rear edge of this rearwardly extending or overhanging part 16, I provide a coal-barrier 19 which depends in line with the rear side of the front wall of the rebox and rests on the rear edge of the plate 4. This barrier is provided with vertical openings 20 for the free passage of air across the firebox, the front vertical portion of the casting 13 being herein shown as provided with a check draft 21 which may be of any suitable kind such as is commonly found adjacent the front upper portion of the iirebox of cooking stoves. Above the rear wall 7 of the iirebox I provide a depending barrier 22 provided with vertical slits or openings 23, said barrier being similar to the barrier 19, and provided at its lower end with one or more projecting ledges or rests 24. The general construction of these two barriers 19, 22 is shown in Fig. 3, where it will be seen that the slits or apertures divide the barrier into depending ngers which readily afford ample passage for the draft and yet prevent coal froin lodging on top of the walls of the firebox or getting back on top of the oven, to interfere in either case with the draft.

In use, when it is desired to toast bread, broil steak, or the-like, the front hinged top portion 16 is swung over forward and downward on its pivot 14 so as to leave the front upper corner of the stove entirely open, and then a broiler or toaster is inserted along the line 25, supported at its front end on the ledges 24 and at its handle end on the top plate 4. If for any reason still more space is required, the hinged part 10 may be raised to such extent as required. The barriers 19 and 22 not only prevent the coal from lodging on top of the walls of the firebox and thereby interfering with the draft, but they facilitate the use of the stove for broiling and the like, the frontbarrier maintaining the plate 4 comparatively clean and the rear barrier providing the ledges 24 for supporting the toaster. They also give strength to the adjacent edge portions of the plates 9, 10, and 16. Being apertured, they facilitate the draft notwithstanding the fact that they extend transversely of the stove. By providing the rearwardly extending top part 16 of the casting 13, the stove is open back sufficiently (when said part 13 is turned on its pivot 14) to enable the attendant to observe the steak, bread, or the like which is being broiled, toasted, etc. Also this construction cooperates with the hinged part 10 to permit the entire front portion of the stove above the firebox to be open without obstruction.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a stove, the combination with the irebox, of a top provided with a movable front part pivoted adjacent the top of the rebox, having a normally substantially horizontal upper portion extending rearwardly above the front wall of said firebox and with an apertured barrier depending from said horizontal upper portion in substantial alinement with the rear vertical face of said front wall in position to prevent the lodgment of fuel on top of said wall.

2,.v In a stove, the combination with the firebox, of a top provided with a movable front part pivoted adjacent the top of the iirebox having a normally substantially horizontal upper portion extending rearwardly above t-he front wall of said firebox with an apertured barrier depending from said horizontal upper portion in substantial alinement with the rear vertical face of said front wall in position to prevent the lodgment of fuel on top of said wall, and an apertured barrier depending from said stove top in substantial alinement with the front vertical face of the rear wall of the iirebox in position to prevent the lodgment of fuel thereon.

3. In a stove, the combination with the firebox having its front wall extending substantially vertically, of a top having a por tion terminating at its front edge in approximately the vertical plane of the rear face of the front wall of the firebox, and a closing device ex tending from the front edge of said top portion to the top of said front wall of the iirebox, said closing device being pivoted at one horizontal edge to swing at its opposite edge into and out of closing engagement with the adjacent part of the stove and having a coal barrier to rest upon the front firebox wall and support the same, whereby, when open, an unobstructed view is provided into the iirebox between the front edge of said top portion and the top of the front wall of the firebox.

4. In a stove, the combination with a iirebox, of a top therefor comprising a main portion and a pivoted front portion, said front portion having a coal barrier adapted to normally rest upon the wall of said {irebox for support.

5. In a stove, the combination with a fire box, of a top having a pivoted front portion provided with an apertured coal barrier adapted to form a continuation of the front wall of the tire box, a pivoted main top portion, and a second coal barrier adjacent the rear of said top and forming a continuation of the rear wall of the iire box.
