WITH ES`SES @a n? offro: wey! vUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEMUEL A. BILLMAN .AND LAWRENCE E. CORNELL, 0F BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA.
LEMON-SQUEEZER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led November 29, 19.10. Serial No. 594,771.
To all 'whom it may concern: Be it known that we, LEMUEL A. BILLMAN and LAWRENCE E. CORNELL, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Butler, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lemon-Squeezers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a lemon squeezer, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device for expeditiously and eco nomically extracting juice from a lemon or other fruit.
Another obj ect of the invention is to furnish a lemon squeezer with novel means for splitting or opening the same whereby the juice of the lemon can be easily and quickly extracted therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to accomplish the above results by a device that is easy to operate, simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and effective for the purposes for which it is intended.
With these and such other objects in view as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing z-Figure 1 is a plan of the lemon squeezing device, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the device, and Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view.
A lemon squeezer in accordance'with this invention comprises an oblong box having an inclined base plate 1, side walls 2 and an end wall 3, said end wall having a central vertical slot or slit 4.
Suitable means as legs 5 and 6 can be eniployed for supporting the base plate 1 at an inclination, the legs 5 being of a greater height than the legs 6 whereby juice upon the base plate 1 will move by gravity toward the end wall 3 and drain through an opening 7 provided therefor in said base plate in a suitable receptacle 8 placed beneath the opening 7. 1
Pivotally mounted between the forward ends of the side walls 2 by pins 9 is the enlarged end 10 of an operating lever 11. The operating lever 11 has the under side thereof provided with two apertured lugs 12 and pivotally mounted between said lugs by a pin 13 is the rear apertured end of a pitman 14, said pitman having the forward end thereof apertured and pivotally connected by a pin 15 to apertured lugs 16 carried by the rear side of a cross bar 17. The cross bar 17 has the ends thereof slidably mounted in longitudinal confronting grooves 18 provided therefor in the walls 2.
Suitably connected to the front side of the cross bar 17 is the rearward extension 19 of a compression head 20, said head being preferably circular in elevation and provided with diametrically opposed lugs 21, said lugs extending into the grooves 18 whereby the compression head 20 can be evenly moved within the oblong box. The front side of the compression head 20 has a triangular-shaped piercing knife or blade 22 suitably connected, as at 23 to said compression head. This knife or blade is adapted to pierce a lemon 24 or other fruit placed endwise against the end wall 3, and as the knife pierces and severs the lemon 24, the compression head 20 is adapted to squeeze the juice from the lemon without necessarily disturbing or removing the seeds or any of the pulp from the lemon, consequently pure lemon juice can be obtained suitable for making lemonade without resorting tothe use of a strainer.
It is thought that the operation and utility of the device will be apparent without further description, and we reserve the right to utilize various materials in constructing the device.
What we claim is 1. A device of the type described, comprising an oblong box having an inclined bottom provided with an opening at the rear end thereof, a lever pivotally mounted at the other end of said box, a cross bar slidably mounted between the walls of said box and adapted to be shifted by a movement of said lever, a compression head movable with said cross bar, and a piercing and severing knife carried by said cross head.
2. A device Vof the type described, comprising. an oblong box havingrthe bottom plate thereof provided with an opening at one end, a compression head slidably mounted between the side Walls of said box, a piercing and severing knife carried by said head, and means carried by said box and adapted to be actuated to move said compression head vWithin said box.
3. A device of the type described, comprising an oblong box having an inclined bottom With the lower end thereof provided with an opening, and t-he side Walls of said box with longitudinal guide grooves, a cross bar slidably mounted inthe grooves of said box, a compression headmovable with said cross bar, a triangular-shaped piercing and severing knife carried by said compression head, and means including a lever daptedtovshift said cross bar Within said 4. A device of the type described, comprising an inclined bottom plate having the lower end thereof provided with an opening, side walls carried by said bottoni plate and having the inner sides thereof provided with longitudinal grooves, an end Wall at the lower end of said bottom plate and provided with a slot, a cross bar shdably mounted in the grooves of said Walls, a compression head slidably mounted in the grooves of said Walls and connected to said cross bar, a knife carried by said compression head, a lever pivotally mounted between the rear ends of said Walls, and a pitman pivotally connected to said cross bar and to said lever, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof We aHix our signatures in the presence of two Witnesses.
