UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BLAND, OF THOMASTON, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DASH-BOARDS FOR CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,140, dated January 25, 1870 .To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN BLAND, of Thoma'ston, in the county of Upson and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Dash-Board; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in dash-boards for buggies and other wagons and it consists in an improved construction of the same in sheet metal, in substitution of the parts commonly made of leather, whereby it is designed to produce much cheaper dash boards in first cost, also much more durable ones.
The drawing represents a perspective view of my improved dashboard.
The frame A is made of iron, and may be of the usual form.
B represents the front or principal part of the board, which I make of sheet-iron, copper, zinc, or other metal, as preferred, attaching it to the front of the iron frame A by rivets or otherwise, extending at the lower edge, 0, a sufficient distance below the frame to lap by and hide the front end of the carriagebody.
I also lap the upper edge over the frame, down on the inside a short distance, and wind it around a strong wire, D, and rivet it to the frame above the wire, as at E. I make use of this wire for the hinge of the fall F by notching the turned-over part G of the front for the reception of straps H, riveted to the front and bent around the said wire.
In this way I provide dash-boards with sheet-metal fronts and falls with less cost and labor, and which will last Very much longer.
These dashboards may be ornamented by painting, japanning, or plating, and be made as fine in style and finish as when made of leather.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Dash-boards for buggies and other vehicles having the fronts and falls made of sheet metal, and the front arranged to project below the end of the body, and to lap over the top and support the wire D and the fall hinged to the said wire, all substantially as specified.
JOHN BLAND.
I Witnesses:
J. W. SUGos, W. S. OLIPHANT.
