RECEPTACLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED H. S. SWAN, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.

The present invention relates to receptacles and more particularly to the type having handles projecting from upright walls, and it has for an object to provide a construction which will permit the handles to be employed to sustain the receptacle at either end upon a suitable support, so that the bottom of the receptacle need not be employed for supporting the said receptacle.

To this and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claim at the end of the specification.

In the drawings: Figure l is a side view of a wash boiler embodying this invention; Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view illustrating one handle of the receptacle resting upon-a suitable support, and Fig. 3 is a detail View of one of the handles.

In the handling of large receptacles, such as wash boilers, it is desirable at times to remove them from a high support, such as a stove, in order that their contents may be reached with ease, and it is not advisable to place the receptacle on the floor, a chair or table as the latter will become blackenedfrom the carbon on the bottom of the receptacle. In this invention the advantage of the lowly supported receptacle is obtained by supporting the receptacle at one end from one handle while another handle on the opposite wall is grasped by the hand of the user.

The embodiment of the invention herein shown comprises a receptacle or wash boiler 1 having handles on opposite upright walls. These handles each preferably embody a Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed February 19, 1909.

pair of standards 2 having inner ends 3 rigidly secured to the receptacle, said standards projecting upwardly and outwardly from the turned ends and having their outer ends connected by a grip portion 4 whose ends preferably seat in sockets 5 formed in the standards. In order to sustain the receptacle at one or both ends on a suitable support 6 the handles are each provided with one or more rests preferably two, one at each end of the grip portion. These rests are preferably in the form of depending projections 7 made from the sheet metal blank of which the standards are formed. They are positioned on the under side of the standards below the grip portion laterally turned 6 the grip portion will be arranged relation to the support. This permits the hand of a user to be placed under or removed from beneath the grip while the receptacle is'sustained by the rests 7. The standards are also each preferably recessed at 8 between the grip portion and the secured ends so that when the support 6 is narrow, such as the edge of a wash tub or pail, the latter may be received within the recess to sustain the receptacle.

A receptacle constructed in accordance with this invention may be manufactured without additional cost as the projections are made simultaneously with the making of the grip supports.

The receptacle may be supported in the manner shown in Fig. 2 without fear of injury to the hand as the grip will be located above the support 6 at such a distance that in spaced the hand will be free after the receptacle has been positioned as shown. When the boiler is supported with the edge of a tub or pail in the recessed portion 8, the walls of the latter permit the boiler to turn on the edge as a center in order to dump the contents of the boiler, the rear wall of the recessed portion having an outwardly extending projection 9 at its inner end so as to prevent the slipping during the dumping.
