GEORGE A. SAGENDORPI-I, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE PENN METAL CEILING AND ROOFING COMPANY, LIMITED, A CORPORATION- OF PENN- SYLVANIA.
CULVERT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 4, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. SAGEN- DORPH, of Newton, in the county of MiddleseX and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Culverts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
This invention has reference to improvements in culverts and particularly to improvements in sheet metal culverts.
The invention resides particularly in the peculiar construction of the upper and lower sections or members of the culvert and the means for securing said sections together.
The object of the invention is to so construct a sheet metal culvert having a series of sections one of which is formed of corrugated material, that said sections may be secured together without the use of tools whereby said sections may be shipped in knocked down condition and may be readily assembled at the place at which the culvert is to be built.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description.
The invention consists in the sheet metal culvert herein described and claimed.
Figure 1, represents a perspective VlGW of the improved culvert. Fig. 2, represents an end view showing a modified construction thereof. Fig. 8, represents a sectional view taken on line 83 Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
Sheet metal culverts are generally manufactured at a distance from the point of their use and, for the purpose of facilitating their transportation, are sometimes made in segmental sections. Various expedients have been adopted for securing said sections together with varying degrees of success and when one of said culvert sections is transversely corrugated it has been found particularly diflicult to secure the sections together to form a tight joint.
As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings 5 indicates a segmental culvert section formed of sheet metal transversely corrugated, to increase the strength thereof and preferably,
surfaces of the member 5 and secured near the edge portions thereof are the sheet metal strips 6, 6 which are bent outward over the longitudinal edges of said member 5 to form shoulders 7, 7 having at their outer edges lips 8, 8 extending approximately parallel to said strips 6, 6. The complemental sheet metal culvert section 9 forming, in this instance, the bottom of the culvert is or may be smooth and, at its longitudinal edges, is bent outward to form the longitudinal shoulders 10, 10 having the lips 11, 11 bent therefrom.
Locking strips 12, 12 are provided having the inwardly turned edges 13, 13 and there by adapted, when the shoulders 7, 7 and 10, 10 are brought together to slide lengthwise onto the lips 8, 8 and 11, 11 to lock the culvert sections together and form approximately tight joints between the shoulders 7, 7 and 10, 10 of the respective sections 5 and 9.
In the modification shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the strips 6, 6 are secured to the outer sides of the corrugated segmental section 5 and have the upturned lips 8, 8. In this construction the shoulders 10, 10, approxi mately along their line of juncture with their section 9, bear against the longitudinal edges of section 5 so that the shoulders 10, 10 may be quite tightly drawn against the edges of said section 5 and against the shoulder formed at the juncture of the strips 6, 6 with their lips 8, 8 when the securing strips 12, 12 are driven lengthwise into place over the lips 8, 8 and 11 appertaining to the sections 5 and 9.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A culvert formed of two segmental sheet sections of which one has strips secured along its longitudinal edges and having angularly extending outer lips, the other of said sections having outwardly extending longitudinal shoulders furnished with lips bent from said shoulders, and slidable looking means engaging pairs of said lips.
2. A culvert comprising two segmental furnished With angularly disposed lips, and sheet metal sections of which one has strips, locking strips adapted to slidably engage the secured to the outer surface of said section, lips of the respective culvert sections.
said strips having edges bent therefrom the GEORGE A. SAGENDORPH. other of said culvert members having out- Witnesses:
wardly extending shoulders, bearing against N. J. MILLER,
the edges of said first culvert section, and H. E. MORTON.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
