Specification of Letters ratent.

Application YFiled October 13, 1908. Serial No. 457,576.
To all whom t may concern.'
'Be it known that I, @nantais FREDERICK Iii/nenne, of the city of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Sleeping- Car Berths; and I do hereby declare that thel following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My rinvention relates particularly to the type of berths having a portion displaceable to alord room for the occupant while dressing,.and it maybe said brieiiy to consist of the seat sections after having been brought together to formthe bed, being tiltablle into vertical position against one side of the berth and independentlyof the back sections which remain lying upon the seat frames and serve as seats for the occupant. For full comprehension, however, of the invention reference must be had to the accompanying drawings in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts and whei.n,
Figure l is a plan vievvr of a section ifith the seat and back cushions extended tov Jard each other to form the bed, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line A A Fig. 1, illustrf `ing the seat cushions tilted to one side i .-.ependently of the back cushions. Fig. 3 a perspective view of a berth constructed according to my invention. f
The seatcushions are indicated. at 6, b, and the back cushions lat c, c. The seat cushions carry a pair of hooks 'e or other locking devices, that hook upon4 one cushion being adapted to enga-ge the other seat cushion and lock such cushions together. A pair of brackets f extend .from one side of the berth andare hinged so as to be swung against the side of the berth.
When the occupant wishes to dress he tilts the cushions b b to a vertical position, the mattress g and bedding h being carried with it and an ample space is thus provided, while the back cushions c, c, temporarily lying upon the frames 7c of theseats, afford seats for the occupant.
What I claim is as ollows;*
1. In a sleeping car, a berth comprising intact seat cushions and back cushions, ex-
tending the full Width of the compartment, the seat cushions being adapted to betilted to vertical position, independently if the back cushions, for the purpose of providing dressing space and permitting the back cushions to at the same'time serve as seats.
2. In a lsleeping car, a berth lcomprising intact seat cushions and backcushions, eX- tending the full width of the compartment, the seat cushions being adapted to be tilted to vertical position, independently of the back cushions, for the purpose of providing dressing space `and permitting the back cushions to at the same timeserve as seats, and devices carried by such seat cushions for detachably fastening the same together.
3. In combination in a sleeping car berth, intact seat and back cushions extending the full width of the compartment and forming the bed, one of said cushions being adjustable to provide a temporary space for dressing without disturbing another cushion or cushions, and means tor supporting the adjustable cushion above the floor in all positions thereof, substantially as described.
Ll. In combination in a sleeping car berth, a bed comprising intact seat and back cushions extending transversely the full width of the berth, both of the middle cushions being adjustable to leave space for dressing within the compartment, while the 'other cushions `remain in the position as used for a bed, and
means for supporting the cushions the floor, substantially as described.
5. In combination in a slee-ping car intact back and seat cushions forming the bed, one or more of said cushion members being a` justable from a horizontal to a vertical por;- tion to leave space for dressing while he other cushions remain in a horiaontal position, substantially as described 6. In combination in a sleeping car, intact back and seat cushions forming the bed, one or more of said cushion members being adjustable from a horizontal to a vertical position to leave space for dressing, lwhile the other cushions remain in a horizontal position, and. means tor supporting the cushions above the car i'loor, substantially as described.
. m7. 'In combination in a sleeping car berth, a bed comprising seat and back cushions extending transversely of the berth', pivoted brackets extending out from the car wall above the car floor beneath the cushions forming the middle sections of the bed for supporting the same, -said middle sections being adjustable to leave space for dressing, said brackets supportingsaid middle sections both in their horizontall ij-ositions and in their adjusted potitions, substantially as described. i
above .l 8. In combination in a sleeping car berth, j
a bed comprising seat and back cushions exextending out from the car Wall above the -car Hoor beneath the'cushi'ons forming the middle sections of the bed and having a depression for receiving and supporting the same, saidl middle sections being adjust-able to leave space for dressing, said bracket-s made up of cushions extending transversely supporting .said middle sections both 'in 'their horizontal positions and' in their adjusted positions, substantially as described.
9. In a sleeping car a berth having `a bed made' upV of cushions extendingtransversely ofthe berth. from the aisle to the'car Wall,
-, means for supporting said cushions above the car Hoor, the middle ,cushions'of the'bed being adjustably supportedl toy be turnedl throughout their-length from a position of use as a bed to a position to clear a space ',within the compartment for dressin the other cushions remaining down, su stantially as described.
10. In a sleeping carberth having a b'ed made up of cushions extending transversely 4of the berth from the aisle to thel car Wall,
brackets extending 'above the ioor for sup-' porting'A the bed, the middle cushions being arranged to turn throughouti their.length and slide in relation to' the said supporting brackets to clear a space for dressing While lthe other cushionsy remain down, substantially as described.
11. A sleeping'car berth having a bed of the berth from theai'sle to the car Wall, brackets extending above the floor for supporting the bed., the middle cushions asv a Whole having turning and sliding movement in relation to ,the said brackets to clear a space for dressing While the other cushions remain down, and means for limiting the sliding movement in respect to the said bracket, substantially as described. 4 l In testimony whereof, I have signedvmy name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
